Seven returning players who are expected to be members of the 2014 Oregon Ducks baseball team competed in summer wooden bat leagues around the country, while one was a member of the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. The summer season has wrapped up for all but three of the players, Updates for each player are listed below.
Tommy Thorpe (College National Team/USA Baseball)
The Ducks’ Friday night starter for the last half of the season finished the 20-game schedule with a 1-0 record and a 4.50 ERA in five games. He struck out 11 hitters in 10 innings pitched. The College National Team finished the tour with a 20-3 record including a 13-0 record in exhibition games and a 7-3 record in international play.
Garrett Cleavinger (Falmouth Commodores/Cape Cod League)
The Ducks set-up man in 2013 helped lead the Commodores to the Cape Cod League playoffs (which run from Aug. 6 to Aug. 14). He has struck out 22 hitters in 12.2 innings pitched. The Ducks’ lefty is 0-2 in 13 appearances and hasn’t allowed a run while giving up just two hits in his last five outings. In the playoffs, Cleavinger tossed 0.1 innings in Wednesday’s 5-4 loss to Cotuit allowing a hit and no runs.
Scott Heineman (Brewster Whitecaps/Cape Cod League)
The Ducks’ starting right fielder in 2013 batted .304 in 38 games leading the Whitecaps to a 14-29-1 record. He led the Whitecaps in at bats (148), hits (45), doubles (8), triples (3) and stolen bases (24). In the season finale for Brewster on August 4, Heineman played all nine positions in a 5-1 loss to Harwich. He started at 1st base, moved to 2nd base, then 3rd base, catcher, center field, left field, pitcher (0.1 IP, 1 K, 1 H, 0 R), right field and shortstop. Heineman, who was named a starter in the Cape Cod League All-Star Game, led the league in stolen bases and triples, while finishing 11th in runs, 16th in doubles and 18th in batting average.
Darrell Hunter (Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox/Cape Cod League)
A key member of Oregon’s bullpen in 2013, Hunter is 1-2 with 5.00 ERA and seven saves (third most in the league) in 13 appearances for the Red Sox, who advanced to the Cape Code League playoffs. He has 21 strikeouts in 18 innings pitched, while allowing just 19 hits. Hunter picked up the win over Brewster on June 29 striking out four in three innings of relief while not allowing any hits.
Kevin Minjares (Conejo Oaks/California Collegiate League)
A key reserve infielder in 2013 for the Ducks, Minjares hit a team-best .382 with a team-high .495 on-base percentage while leading the Oaks to a 27-22 record and a fourth-place finish. In 24 games he was 29-for-76 with two doubles, 10 RBI and 10 walks. He played in the California Collegiate League All-Star Game on July 17 in Compton, Calif.
Nick Catalano (Alaska Goldpanners/Alaska Baseball League)
A reserve outfield in 2013 as a freshman for the Ducks, Catalano helped lead the Goldpanners to a 22-13 record and the league tournament championship. He batted .212 with three home runs, 18 RBI and eight doubles in 38 games. In the tournament championship best-of-three series, Catalano went 3-for-9 with a double and a RBI to help the Goldpanners sweep the Anchorage Glacier Pilots. He was 2-for-6 with a double and a RBI in a 3-2 13-inning win in game one. He followed that with a 1-for-3 effort in a 3-1 win to give the Goldpanners the title.
Mitchell Tolman (Conejo Oaks/California Collegiate League)
A freshman All-American for the Ducks in 2013, Tolman batted .257 with 11 doubles and 20 RBI in 27 games. He played in the California Collegiate League All-Star Game on July 17 in Compton, Calif.
Jared Priestley (Corvallis Knights/West Coast League)
A member of Oregon’s bullpen in 2013, Priestley has appeared in seven games for the Knights throwing 18.1 innings. His last appearance was on July August 8 when he struck out four in 4.1 innings while allowing two earned runs on four hits. He is 1-1 for the Knights with a 4.91 ERA. The Knights won the South Division with a 34-17 record and open tournament play on Tuesday, August 3.
