EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon completed its second series sweep of the season, shutting out Nevada, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at PK Park.
The Ducks are now 16-6 on the season and have won 11 of their last 12. The Ducks swept Fresno State earlier this month as UO has now swept two series in one season for the first time since 1972.
Nevada has now lost four in a row and falls to 10-10 on the season.
Another outstanding performance by an Oregon starter was instrumental in the Ducks victory as right-hander Alex Keudell shut out the Wolf Pack for seven innings. The Portland native scattered four hits and walked two while reaching a new career high with nine strikeouts.
Also pitching in the combined shutout was freshman lefty Christian Jones and sophomore right-hander Joey Housey. The Hollywood, Fla., native pitched the final one and 1/3 inning of the game, striking out two and recording the first save of his collegiate career.
Oregon took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after back-to-back errors put KC Serna and Danny Pulfer at first and second. The speedsters were successful in their double steal attempt and moved to second and third as Nevada starter Chris Garcia walked Jack Marder, loading the bases and setting up Rodriguez’s two –run single sent through the left side.
Garcia (1-1) ended up taking the loss for the Wolf Pack lasting only one inning and surrendering two unearned runs. Jeremy Cole pitched five innings of relief for Nevada surrendering just one run on three hits and two walks. Tom Jameson pitched the game’s final two innings allowing two runs – one earned – on two hits.
The Ducks’ 2-0 lead was in jeopardy just once as Nevada threatened in the fourth. A leadoff walk followed by Ronnie Mitchell’s double had Shaun Kort lingering at third and Mitchell on second with only one out. Nick Leid came to the plate and hit a solo fly ball into center field on the attempted sacrifice, but Jett Hart’s throw from center got to Rodriguez at the plate just in time to double off Kort attempting to score from third.
In the seventh, Oregon added some insurance as Piazzisi led off the inning by driving a double into right center. Altobelli was then walked, and a double steal moved both runners to third and second. After a 12 minute rain delay, Serna’s sacrifice fly to center scored Piazzisi from third as the Ducks took a 3-0 lead.
In the eighth, Rodriguez reached on a throwing error and scored on the hit-and-run as Raulinaitis swung at the first pitch he saw and sent a stand-up double screaming down the left field line to score Rodriguez. Raulinaitis moved to third on a balk, and then scored on Piazzisi’s RBI single hit back through the middle as Oregon took a 5-0 lead into the ninth.
Oregon will play the final game of its nine-game homestand Tuesday, hosting Southern Utah at 5 p.m. at PK Park.
Notes: The last time swept two series in the same season was in 1972; April 28-29 vs. Washington and May 12-13 vs. Oregon State…this was the fourth time in 2010 Oregon has shutout an opponent.
