CORVALLIS, Ore. – Christian Jones was imposing on the mound and Oregon’s offense capitalized on its opportunities both early and late in the game as the Ducks upset No. 3 Oregon State 7-2 on Tuesday night at Goss Stadium.

Jones (4-2) had a shutout going into the bottom of the ninth before surrendering a two-run homer to Garrett Nash. The southpaw allowed two runs – one earned – on six hits and one walk in a career high eight innings of work.

The Ducks (23-20) now even the season series with Oregon State (32-10) at one game apiece while also picking up their first win at Goss Stadium since the UO program was reinstated in 2009. The teams will meet again in the Pacific Source Civil War Series to end the regular season in Pac-10 action at PK Park (May 27-29).

Jones faced the minimum through five innings despite issuing a walk and allowing two hits as the Duck defense turned three double plays. Nash was OSU’s first runner in scoring position with a two-out double laced to left in the sixth.

Oregon’s defense finished the game turning a season-high four double plays as the Beavers were held to six hits. Oregon closer Kellen Moen recorded the final three outs of the game in the bottom of the ninth.

The Ducks had a five-run lead after three innings and extended that lead with single scores in both the seventh and eighth innings.

Brett Hambright , KC Serna and Marcus Piazzisi led the Ducks with two hits apiece as Oregon totaled nine on the day.

Oregon chased OSU starter James Nygren (7-2) early as he surrendered five runs on four hits, two walks and two plunked batters in two and 1/3 innings of work.

Oregon capitalized on an opportunity in the top of the first as a Nygren’s one-out delivery plunked Jack Marder . Stefan Sabol ’s single to center advanced Marder all the way to third before he scored on Shawn Peterson ’s sacrifice fly to center.

J.J. Altobelli ’s safety squeeze in the top of the second scored KC Serna as the Ducks took a 2-0 lead. Serna started the rally with a one-out single up the middle and toyed with Nygren at first base before moving to third on Piazzisi’s single to right.

In the top of the third, Nygren loaded the bases with one out as OSU’s starter sandwiched two walks around a plunked batter. That spelled the end for Nygren as the right-hander was replaced by Scott Schultz on the mound.

With the bases loaded, Brett Thomas sent a chopper back to Schultz, and the right-hander was able to retire Sabol at the plate, but the Ducks responded with some clutch two-out RBI singles scoring three runs.

Serna took Schultz’s 2-1 offering and drove a two-run single into left field, while Piazzisi followed up Serna with a one-run single into center field as Peterson, Ryon Healy and Thomas each scored in the inning.

In relief of Nygren, Schultz held Oregon to one unearned run on four hits and one walk while fanning three.

In the seventh inning, Hambright led off the top of the seventh with a single and eventually scored from a throwing error after Peterson put the ball in play.

In the eighth, Serna reached second on another Oregon State fielding error and was scored on a two-out single from Hambright.

The Ducks return to action on Friday night hosting UCLA in a three-game series at PK Park. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
