Pulfer Selected By Arizona In 19th Round

EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon three-year starter Danny Pulfer was the sixth Oregon Duck selected in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft when he was take in the 19th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks today.

Pulfer, the Ducks’ starting second baseman for the last three seasons, is just the third position player selected in the draft since UO baseball returned to the diamond in 2009.Teammate and draft eligible sophomore Jack Marder was selected in the 16th round by the Seattle Mariners today as well.

Pulfer, the 574th overall pick, was part of Oregon’s original class as the Ducks brought back baseball for 2009 after the program was discontinued following the 1981 season.
Last week, the native of Cypress, Calif., was named to the Pac-10 All-Conference team, becoming the first position player to earn the honor since the Oregon program was reinstated.

During his junior campaign in 2011, Pulfer led the Ducks batting .351 with 79 hits, 16 doubles, two triples, two home runs, a .426 on-base percentage and 105 total bases. Defensively, Pulfer also helped turn 40 double plays in 2011.

In conference games only, Oregon’s leadoff batter led the league batting .387 with 43 hits, while finishing second with a .452 on-base percentage and 57 total bases. The second baseman’s .514 slugging percentage ranked fifth, while his 11 league doubles ranked third.

Pulfer set a new Oregon single-season record with 16 doubles, and also holds the program all-time record with 31. In addition, Pulfer’s 13-game hitting streak from May 10-28, was a new modern era record.

During his three-year career with the Ducks, Pulfer has batted .302 and holds the all-time records for hits (193), doubles (31), and at-bats (639). In addition, Pulfer’s 97 runs scored rank fourth all-time.

Pulfer also set a new Oregon single-game record this season with a 5-for-5 effort at USC on April 16.

During three seasons at Oregon, Pulfer has appeared in 178 games (177 starts) missing just two games and (three starts) during his career at UO.

Pulfer is the 34th Oregon player to be selected in the MLB draft and the third position player to be drafted since the program was brought back in 2009.
