EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Oregon baseball team hosted an alumni game on Friday, Sept. 14 at PK Park in Eugene. The Ducks current squad defeated the Alumni Team by a score of 10-2.
It was the first time since 1981 that UO hosted a true seven-inning alumni game. Last year the Alumni Team lost a three-inning battle with the current Oregon squad.
“It was all-around a great event,” head coach George Horton said. “It’s important for us to introduce some of the younger alumni to our older alumni. This was a chance to tie in the new with the old."
Over 20 former players (dating as far back as the 1970s) participated in this year's event.
"Even though the level of play wasn't the best ever, the day turned out great and it was fun for everyone involved,” Hortan said.
The Alumni Team pitched Ryan Fleckstein, Geoff Nichols, Curtis Raulinaitis, Dylan Gavin, Brett Hambright and Antony Kreitz to name a few.
Other alumni who played were Erik Bonn, Josh Hogan, Joey Housey, Eric Bonn, Kenny Bartz, Mitch Karraker, Shawn Peterson, Colby Sokol, Scott McGough, Alex Keudell, Vernell Warren, Dick Ogan, Mark Rothert, Bob Niehaus, Glen Baggerly, Dean Hummel and Jeff Eberhart.
Unable to make this year’s outing was Joe Giansante, a two-time MVP selection in past UO alumni games.
The current Ducks threw a variety of players on the mound, with junior Jeff Gold getting the start. He was followed by freshmen Jared Preistly and freshman Garrett Cleavinger. Also taking the mound were sophomore Jordan Spencer, freshman Derek Smith, senior David Wylie and junior Darrell Hunter.
Up next for the Ducks is a scrimmage in Bend, Ore., on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Bend Elks Stadium. Following the scrimmage, the players and coaches will host a free kids clinic open to the public.
