Alex Keudell was the seventh Oregon Duck selected in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft when he was take in the 38th round by the Minnesota Twins today.EUGENE, Ore. – Junior
On Tuesday, Keudell’s teammate Madison Boer was selected in the second round by the Twins.
The 6-foot-3 right-hander was the 1,168th overall pick of the draft, and has spent three years as both a starter and reliever at the University of Oregon.
In three seasons with the Ducks, Keudell posts a 12-15 record with a 3.81 ERA, which has improved each season he has been in a UO uniform.
Keudell’s junior campaign was his first season as a full-time starter for the Ducks, posting a 7-3 record and 2.89 ERA while striking out 71 and walking just 24 in 90 and 1/3 innings on the mound.
During his career, the Portland native has tossed two complete games and has pitched in five combined shutouts, including three in 2011.
In the last outing of his junior season, Keudell fell just one out shy of tossing a complete game shutout as the Ducks swept their first Pac-10 series since the program was reinstated in 2009 with a 6-0 victory over then No. 6 Oregon State. Keudell held the Beavers to just two hits, and retired the final 13 batters he faced until exiting the game with two outs in the top of the ninth as senior Kellen Moen was brought out to finish off the game on senior day.
Also during his junior year, Keudell recorded eight quality starts, and on March 23 tossed a nine-inning complete game, holding 2011 West Coast Conference champion San Francisco to one unearned run on four hits while striking out a career-best 11.
His other Pac-10 wins in 2011 include victories over Washington and a series-clinching victory over then 23rd-ranked Arizona.
Out of Jesuit High School in Portland, the 2008 graduate was not selected in the MLB Draft following his senior year for the Crusaders. Keudell was part of Oregon’s original class as the Ducks brought back baseball for 2009 after the program was discontinued following the 1981 season.
Keudell is Oregon’s 35th draft selection in the history of the program and the 14th pick since UO baseball returned to the diamond in 2009. Keudell is also the 10th Oregon pitcher to be selected in the last three years at UO.
