LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Oregon Women's Tennis team kicked off its spring season on Friday at the Freeman Memorial in Las Vegas, Nev.

The individuals participating at the tournament this weekend represent seven of the nation's top programs, including No. 1 Florida, No. 2 UCLA, defending Pac-12 champions USC and Stanford, ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, No. 8 North Carolina, No. 50 UNLV and the 66th-ranked Ducks.

In the Flight One singles bracket, Oregon senior Patricia Skowronski won her first round match, upsetting Florida's Danielle Collins (3-6, 7-5, 6-3), who entered the tournament seeded sixth and ranked 22nd in the nation.  Skowronski's win propelled her into the Round of 16 against North Carolina's Tessa Lyons, who defeated the Duck senior in a tightly contested 6-4, 6-4 match.  Fellow senior Julia Metzger dropped her opening match to UNLV's Lucia Batta (6-1, 6-1).  In the Flight One singles consolation bracket, Metzger fell to North Carolina's Ashley Dai, 6-3, 6-4.

"I was proud of the way that we played today overall," said Oregon head coach Paul Reber. "Nicole [Long]'s play today was outstanding and I can't say enough about the win Patricia [Skowronski] had over Collins. It was a huge victory for her and a great win for the program. I'm looking forward to how we respond tomorrow."

Sophomore Nicole Long topped Ella Bourchier (UNLV) in the quarterfinals of the Flight Two singles bracket, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals.  Long will meet another UNLV competitor, Anett Ferenczi-Bako, in tomorrow morning's semifinals.

In the Flight One doubles competition, North Carolina's Lauren McHale and Lyons defeated Skowronski and Long, Oregon's lone doubles combination in the bracket, 8-6.

Metzger and sophomore Sofia Hager beat UNLV's Bourchier and Alexis Garrett, 8-5, in the Flight Two doubles final.  It was the only match of the bracket.

The Freeman Memorial continues tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 10 a.m.  After the doubles quarterfinals, singles play will continue for both flights.  Oregon's Long will face UNLV's Ferenczi-Bako in the flight two singles semifinals with a berth in Sunday's championship on the line.
