BRAMPTON, Ont. - University of Oregon freshman Cheridan Hawkins kicked off the ISF Junior World Championship by leading the USA Softball Junior National Team to a 10-0 win over Great Britain Monday.

The Anderson, Calif., native struck out all nine batters she faced to earn the victory in the Americans' four-inning decision.

“We were all excited to play our first international game,” Hawkins said. “I felt a bit of nerves coming in, but I went in the circle with a game plan to attack the zone and give my offense a chance to hit.”

Fellow Pac-12 pitcher - UCLA frosh Paige McDuffee - pitched the final inning, allowed the only opposing hit, and posted no walks and strikeouts.

Fellow Duck frosh and second baseman Danica Mercado went 1-for-2 with a second-inning double, an RBI and two runs.

Six other U.S. players hit safely, and two had multiple hits - Emily Crane (2-for-3, RBI) and Andrea Hawkins (2-for-2, RBI).

In the circle for Great Britain, Emma Bridge pitched all three innings, struck out two, walked three, allowed nine hits, and five of her 10 runs allowed were earned.

Lauren Evans collected the lone British hit - a two-out double - in the fourth inning.

“Our girls came out ready to play today,” said USA Team Head Coach Tairia Flowers. “There were a lot of emotions coming into the game with it being our first game of the tournament.  Cheridan did a good job of keeping runners off the base path and she set the tone for us.  Our offense also stepped up by scoring in the first inning and the girls carried that momentum with them the rest of the game.”
