LOS ANGELES – Oregon’s clutch play off the bench and another spectacular catch by right fielder Tyler Baumgartner pushed Oregon to another win at Loyola Marymount. The Ducks scored a run in the top of the ninth to pick up a 4-3 win and a sweep of the three-game series.
The Ducks, who headed into the game with pinch hitters reaching base on 12 of 18 plate appearances in the first six games, got a pinch hit lead-off double by freshman Austin Grebeck to lead off the top of the ninth inning. He advanced to third on a fielding error and scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter J.B. Bryant to give Oregon the lead.
Baumgartner made the win possible with an outstanding catch in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Ducks’ right fielder robbed Tanner Donnels when he made a diving catch into the gap saving a run with two outs in the inning.
Oregon jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning. The Ducks loaded the bases with two hits and a hit batter before Kevin Minjares, who led off the inning with a single, scored when Baumgartner hit into a double play to give UO a 1-0 lead.
Scott Heineman, who reached when he was hit by a pitch, stole home on the next pitch to give Oregon a 2-0 lead. On the next pitch, Mitchell Tolman blasted a home run to right center to put the Ducks up by three.
LMU tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth chasing starter Jordan Spencer, who gave up all three runs in 4.1 innings.
