EUGENE, Ore. – Tyler Baumgartner drove in three runs and Jeff Gold was effective on the mound over six innings to lead No. 12 Oregon to a 7-2 win over USC on Sunday at PK Park. The Ducks clinched the series over the Trojans with the win.
Baumgartner drove in all three of his runs with a bases-loaded double in the fourth inning that gave Oregon a 5-0 lead. He finished the game 2-for-5 with three RBI. It was Baumgartner’s 11th multi-hit game of the season and his fifth multiple-RBI game.
Oregon jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Aaron Payne led off the Ducks’ inning with a triple that Trojan left fielder Bobby Stahel misplayed. Freshman Austin Grebeck picked up the RBI with a groundball to USC first baseman A.J. Ramirez.
The Ducks added four runs in the bottom of the second to push the lead to five. Before Baumgartner capped the inning with a double that Stahel dove for in shallow left-center field, Mark Karaviotis made it 2-0 with a RBI bunt single.
Jeff Gold (5-0) cruised through the first six innings holding the Trojans scoreless while allowing just two hits. USC finally got to Gold in the top of the seventh scoring two runs. The Ducks’ senior right hander allowed four hits in the inning before being relieved by Porter Clayton.
Oregon (14-5, 2-1 Pac-12) answered USC (10-8, 1-2 Pac-12) scoring a run in the seventh and adding another one in the eighth. Nick Catalano, playing his second game after returning from a hand injury, singled to score freshman A.J. Balta in the seventh. Mitchell Tolman picked up a RBI single in the eighth plating Payne.
Kyle Twomey (0-2) took the loss for the Trojans surrendering five earned runs on five hits and four walks. Gold went 6.2 innings and gave up two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
Payne finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Oregon returns to action next Friday when the Ducks open a three-game series against Utah.
