EUGENE, Ore. – No. 25 Oregon jumped on UC Riverside’s starter for early runs for the second straight day and then held on for a 7-4 non-conference win at PK Park on Saturday.

Oregon didn’t waste any time against the Highlanders scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Tyler Baumgartner tripled past diving center fielder Devyn Bolasky to drive in A.J. Balta with the first run. Mitchell Tolman followed with a run-scoring single scoring Baumgartner to put UO up 2-0.

UCR answered with a run in the top of the second on back-to-back doubles by David Andreise and Matthew Ellis, but UO countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. After a pair of Highlander errors, Aaron Payne doubled to right field scoring Nick Catalano and Desmond Santos. Tolman added another RBI single to put the Ducks on top 5-1.

The Highlanders (14-16) cut the lead to 5-4 with a run in the fifth and two runs in the seventh, but the Ducks (26-10) answered with a run in the seventh and a run in the eighth. Kyle Garlick drilled a RBI double to left-center field scoring Tolman, and then A.J. Balta came up with a two-out RBI scoring Mark Karaviotis who tripled with one out.

Jeff Gold got the win moving to 8-0 while allowing four runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings with five strikeouts.  Jake Reed pitched the ninth picking up his eighth save. Zach Varela (4-2) took the loss for UCR.
