The Ducks (2-0) improved their score by nearly eight points from their season-opener in a 283.916-271.796 victory over Azusa Pacific in front of 1,049 fans at Matthew Knight Arena.
APU and UO both exchanged solid scores through the four compulsory heats. The Cougars scored 9.7 or higher in all four heats with a 9.89 in stunt, 9.95 in pyramid, 9.7 in basket toss and another 9.7 in tumbling. Not to be outdone, the Ducks counted with a 9.85 or better in all four heats with a 9.85 in stunt, a perfect 10 in pyramid, a 9.9 in basket toss and a 9.88 in tumbling to grab a 39.63-39.24 lead after the first event.
Azusa Pacific gained nearly a tenth of a point in the stunt round by scoring 9.71 or higher in all three heats to outscore Oregon 29.19-29.10 in event.
A solid effort on pyramid gave the Ducks some breathing room as their lineup posted a 28.65 to the Cougars’ 26.85 to take a 97.38-95.28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Oregon came out energized from the locker room and won the last three events by one point or more. The Ducks tallied a 27.32 in the basket toss while the Cougars countered with a 26.32.
UO was dominant in the tumbling round, winning all six heats and posting four scores of nine or better. The Ducks closed out the effort with Natasha Katzaroff’s electric 9.8 in the open tumbling pass, which earned a 10 starting difficulty value. Oregon won the event by a lopsided 54.29-47.54 margin.
The Ducks finished the night by winning the team routine, 104.926-102.656, to become the first team in the country to eclipse 280 points. UO’s final output was 97 percent of its total team start value of 292.928 points.
Oregon is off until Feb. 12 when it squares off once more with Azusa Pacific, this one in Azusa, Calif.
