Terps Edge Ducks in Down to Wire Thriller
Release Date: 03/24/2011
The matchup between the top two teams in the country lived up to its billing as Oregon (5-1) and Maryland (7-0) put together the highest-scoring dual meet of the season.
The Ducks tied the Terrapins’ nation-leading compulsory score with a 39.79 with all four heats scoring at least a 9.9, including a perfect 10 in the pyramid heat. Maryland countered with a 39.59, giving Oregon a lead of two-tenths of a point after one event.
UO extended its lead with a strong 29.25 mark in stunts, led by a 9.84 in the seven-element heat, while UM tallied a 28.47 to put the Ducks up nearly a point. Maryland closed the gap in the pyramid round, outscoring Oregon 29.25-28.55. The score sent the Ducks into the break with a 97.59-97.31 lead.
The Ducks came out of the break with energy that manifested itself in the basket toss. UO scored 9.77 or better in each heat and tallied a 29.42, beating their previous nation-leading score. Maryland scored a 29.07 and the Ducks held a 127.01-126.38 lead through four.
The meet turned in the tumbling event as Oregon was outscored in its nation-best event for the first time this season, 54.13-53.67. Despite the setback, the Ducks still held a slim lead at 180.68-180.51 going into the final event.
Oregon finished with its second-highest team routine score of the season at 105.700, but Maryland countered with a 107.420 to take its only lead of the meet.
“We definitely didn’t peak tonight, but we are hoping to peak at the right time at nationals,” head coach Felecia Mulkey said. “There were a couple bobbles in the team routine that cost us in the end after we led the whole meet. However, we did have a couple personal bests that we are very proud of.”
The Ducks close out the regular season on Saturday when they head to Fairmont State. That meet begins at 3 p.m. PT (6 p.m. ET).
