Earning the top overall seed in the inaugural National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association National Championships has already yielded some hardware for the Oregon acrobatics and tumbling team.
Head coach Felecia Mulkey was named the NCATA Coach of the Year while junior Chelsea White was named an All-American at the organization’s awards banquet on Wednesday night.
Mulkey led UO to a 6-1 regular season in the first season that the Ducks competed exclusively in the NCATA meet format. Under her tutelage, the Ducks have eclipsed 283 points in four consecutive meets. Oregon owns the nation’s top score with a 289.204 against Quinnipiac on March 21st and is seeded first in the tournament thanks to a 285.771 scoring average.
Off the mat, Mulkey has been a key figure for the NCATA as it moves to gain emerging sport status from the NCAA. Among the accomplishments of the NCATA, Mulkey helped the organization create a standardized scoring system that all schools in the organization follow.
White is one of nine athletes to earn All-America honors by the NCATA. The junior was a key contributor in every event for the Ducks. The Valencia, Calif., native helped UO post nation-leading scores in four events: compulsories (39.79), stunt (29.54), basket toss (29.42) and tumbling (55.08).
To earn All-America status, athletes had to compete in every skill event in a minimum of two home and two away meets.
The NCATA National Championships begin on Thursday with No. 3 Azusa Pacific and No. 6 Quinnipiac competing at 5 p.m. That meet will be followed by No. 4 Baylor and No. 5 Fairmont State.
Oregon will face the winner of the Baylor/Fairmont State meet at approximately 8 p.m. on Friday.
