Acrobatics & Tumbling Opens Title Defense on Friday

EUGENE, Ore.- The University of Oregon acrobatics and tumbling team welcomes Azusa Pacific (1-0) and Quinnipiac (0-1) for a tri-meet to open the 2012 season on Friday (Feb. 17) at Matthew Knight Arena at 7 p.m.

The reigning National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) champions, who finished the 2011 slate with an 8-1 record, return 26 from the championship squad while bringing in 16 new Ducks. Head coach Felecia Mulkey only lost 11 total from last year's team.

Mulkey, who was tabbed as the NCATA Coach of the Year, returns All-American Chelsea White in addition to individual champions Natasha Katzaroff and Kelsey Rowell. The Ducks also only lost two members total from their four individual event national champions.

APU and Quinnipiac both began the season on Feb. 4. Azusa Pacific upended Baylor 269.39-257.40 in Azusa, Calif. while Quinnipiac came up short to Maryland, 284.540-274.855.

UO and Fairmont State are the only two teams that have not competed in a meet this season.

DUCKS CAPTURE OSA HONOR

The University of Oregon acrobatics and tumbling squad was one of six UO athletes and teams to take home an award during the Oregon Sports Award ceremony on Sunday in Portland. The Ducks won the George Pasero Team of the Year for last year's championship run.

TICKETS

General admission seating ticket prices are $5 for adults, $3 for children and seniors and $2 for groups of 10 or more. Admission is free of charge for UO students. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the North Zone ticket office. More information on tickets can be obtained here.

MARKETING/PROMOTIONS

Patrons that show a ticket stub from Thursday's women's basketball game against California receive free admission to Friday's meet. Friday is also BI-MART $2 Night. Show your BI-MART card at the ticket window and receive admission for $2. Fans can also listen to head coach Felecia Mulkey's post meet comments in the Mac Club and get autographs from members of the 2011-12 acrobatics and tumbling team.

WELCOME TO THE FOLD

On Nov. 16, 2011, the NCATA announced the addition of Plymouth State and UMass-Dartmouth. Both teams begin competition during the 2012-13 season. Also joining will be Alderson-Broaddus College. Alderson-Broaddus is a Division II school from the WVIAC Conference. They are the second school in this conference to sponsor this sport at the Varsity Level. Fairmont State is the other.

Shelby Armstrong5-2 Base

Caddo Mills, Texas/Bishop Lynch High School

High School/Club: Joins Oregon after achieving All-American, National Champion and World Champion accolades with the Cheer Athletics Panthers...involved off the mat with the Invisible Children Club, which fundraises to help stop the kidnappings of children to be trained as soldiers in Uganda and other parts of Africa.

Personal: Born on December 4 to Greg and Scherry Armstrong...has one brother, Justin.

Mulkey on Armstrong: "Shelby is a strong base with potential to grow into a powerhouse in that position.  She is a talented tumbler that can execute any pass thrown her way. Shelby had her pick of college opportunities and we are happy that she chose to be a Duck."

Colleen Curry5-4 Base

Temecula, Calif./Great Oak High School

High School/Club: Active with the Red Wave Club, which is a school spirit based organization...part of the California All-Stars.


Personal
: Born on January 5 to Tom and Nancy Curry...has two sisters, Cambria and Carly.

Mulkey on Curry: "Colleen is a versatile athlete that will be beneficial as a base and second-level flyer.  She is a solid tumbler with the potential to add many elite passes to her arsenal.  Colleen impressed me during the recruiting process with her willingness and ability to learn new skills.  I feel confident that she will lead by example within our program."

Paris Duhamel5-8 Back Base

Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe High School

High School/Club: Twice made it to the high school state championships, capturing the title in 2009 after finishing runner up in 2008...honor roll recipient that was named most valuable by cheerleading squad last season... qualified for the 2008 World Championships with the Peak Athletics Tigers and posted a top-15 finish...has had success in track and field, earning third place in the 5A State Championships in the pole vault and second place on the 4x100 relay squad last season...was tabbed most valuable by track and field team in 2011 and had several scholarship offers in the sport...off the mat, stays heavily involved with special education children and started a cheerleading program focused on them in Centennial.

Personal: Daughter of Dawn and Bobby Duhamel, born on June 12...has two sisters, Monet and Cecelia.

Mulkey on Duhamel: "Paris is an all around athlete, her background in track and field will help her transition into a collegiate A & T back base.  Her height and upper body strength needed for pole vault is essential for the back position.  Paris' technique and attention to detail will play right into our scoring system."

Alexis McCallister 5-1 Base

Kennewick, Wash./Kamiakin High School

High School/Club: Cheers competitively at Elite Force Cheer...earned national championships in 2010 and 2011 in the stunts...captured Level Four Coed National Championship this past year.

Personal: Daughter of Todd and Rachelle McCallister...born on September 30...has a brother Luke and sister, Olivia.

Mulkey on McCallister:  "Alexis is a solid base with elite tumbling skills.  Her mindset is exactly what we look for within our program and her work ethic is unmatched.  Every team needs an athlete like Alexis and we are happy that she decided to be a Duck."

Chandler White5-2 Flyer

Valencia, Calif./Hart High School

High School/Club: Won 2009 Large Varsity Advanced championship at USA Nationals, in addition to winning the Aloha Spirit International competition in Hawaii during the same year with Hart High School...began cheerleading and gymnastics career at GymCheerUSA and with the CA Flyers...won the Cheersport Nationals in 2008 with CA Flyers and finished in the top 30 at the World Championships...finished third in the state on the bars in level five competition and notched a  36 in the all-around portion...maintains a 3.53 GPA.

Personal: Born on November 8 to David and Susan White...has two brothers, Christopher and Chase and two sisters, Chelsea and Chloe...sister, Chelsea is a senior on the team.

Mulkey on White: "We looked for one flyer from across the nation this year...and it was Chandler White.  Her balance, flexibility and air awareness make her a valuable asset in that position.  Her tumbling skills match, if not surpass her flying ability.  We are excited to get her on campus."
