On Thursday, May 3 the O Heroes program hosted their second annual “Showtime” student-athlete talent show. The show, a combination of video and live performances, featured submissions from nearly all 17 varsity teams. This year’s event had record attendance and raised a staggering $2,290 for the O Heroes program.

“I look forward to [Showtime] every year,” senior women’s lacrosse player Jana Drummond said. “The show always has the audience engaged and laughing. We know about people’s athletic talent, so it’s fun to see everyone’s ‘hidden’ talents off of the field and court.”

Undoubtedly, the biggest hit of the night was the winning video submission by the Oregon men’s golf team. While the video had the audience roaring with laughter, the team’s video left spectators jaw-dropped at their ability to get UO football coach Chip Kelly to make a guest appearance.

“They talk about our speed with Kenjon Barner and De’Anthony Thomas in the likes of our football program,” Kelly said of the Oregon men’s golf team. “But I’ll put Eugene Wong and Tyler Park up against those guys any day… [Golf] not only wins the day, they win the next day too.”

The video included cameos from many Oregon athletes from the Oregon football, lacrosse, track & field and cheer teams, in conjunction with appearances by UO Athletic Department coaches, staff and alumni. In a close second, Track & Field’s music video to a song they wrote, directed and produced by themselves was a yet another hit with the audience of over 500 student-athletes, UO personnel and community members in attendance.

In the live performance category, football secured first place with their act featuring players performing dances that reflected the region they come from. From the ho-down to the dougie to the Haka, the crowd cheered on the football team as they let fans and fellow athletes see first-hand the diverse backgrounds that make up their team.

In addition to athlete performances, the event included other on-stage recognitions for the program’s community partners. Each year Oregon student-athletes contribute around 4,200 hours of community service in partnership with organizations including Boys and Girls Club of Emerald Valley, KIDSPORTS, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, Food For Lane County the Lane County School Districts, UO Fraternity & Sorority Life, the Holden Leadership Center and more.
