Oregon is ranked No. 3 in the preseason USA Today coaches' poll, matching the Ducks' highest ever rating to open the season.
The Ducks also were No. 3 in the 2011 preseason, after playing in the BCS Championship game and before going on to win the Rose Bowl. Oregon was also preseason top-10 according to the coaches in 2012 (fifth) and 2001 (eighth).
Oregon is behind Alabama and Ohio State in the initial 2013 poll. The Ducks finished behind only the national champion Crimson Tide to end last season, when the unbeaten Buckeyes were ineligible for the poll due to NCAA sanctions.
Alabama received 58 of 62 first-place votes, Ohio State got three and Texas A&M received one.
Oregon's Pac-12 North rival Stanford is one spot behind the Ducks at No. 4. UCLA is No. 21, USC is No. 24 and Oregon State is No. 25. Arizona State, Arizona and Washington also received votes.
One of the Ducks' preseason opponents, Tennessee, also received a single vote.
