Oregon coach Mark Helfrich and his players today expressed sorrow at the news of former UO tight end Colt Lyerla’s arrest Wednesday night.

“Our only comment is the same as when he chose to leave the program, and that’s that we wish him well, and hopefully he can get through this situation,” Helfrich said following the Ducks’ walk-through this morning.

Lyerla left the team earlier this month. He was arrested late Wednesday.

“It’s just the worst-possible-case scenario,” UO offensive lineman Tyler Johnstone said. “I just hope he can get all the help he needs. It’s nothing you ever want to see.

“It definitely sucks. But we’re going to have to move forward and keep doing our thing.”

Players said they considered Lyerla a friend, but pledged to focus on their season, which continues Saturday at 4 p.m. against UCLA.

“It’s just sad, unfortunate,” center Hroniss Grasu said. “But we can’t let that affect this team, and it won’t.”

Other observations: As usual, this was the Ducks’ Thursday pregame walk-through, in which they review offense, defense and special teams plays against the scouts at a slow tempo. So, no highlights to report. ... A dense fog hung over Autzen Stadium when the workout began, but it burned off over the course of the morning. … UO coach Mark Helfirch plans to be on site for at least a portion of ESPN’s “College GameDay” on Saturday morning. … Jake Pisarcik’s dad, former NFL quarterback Joe, and the parents of DeForest Buckner and Jake Fisher all were in attendance this morning.
