Though the football team had a bye, there was plenty of action for Oregon athletics over the weekend ...
At the Pac-12 cross country title, Edward Cheserek became the first Oregon freshman to win the individual men's race on Saturday. He covered 8 kilometers in 24:56, helping the No. 4 Ducks to a second-place finish behind Colorado. On the women's side, No. 12 Oregon took fourth.
The Oregon men's basketball team trailed at halftime before winning its second exhibition game Saturday over Point Loma. The Ducks were short-handed, but the game was still a wake-up call entering Friday's regular-season opener against Georgetown in South Korea.
Later Saturday at Matthew Knight Arena, the UO volleyball team completed a gritty five-set win over Arizona. That gave the Ducks a split of the weekend, after their loss Friday to Arizona State. This weekend kicked off the second round of Pac-12 play, and Oregon hopes to pick up some momentum entering the postseason.
Today, the women's golf team kicks off a tournament in Hawaii, the men's golf team tees it up in Southern California and the women's basketball team plays its second and final exhibition after an encouraging debut by three newcomers last week.
