Seven players who are expected to be members of the 2014 Oregon Ducks baseball team are competing in summer wooden bat leagues around the country. Updates for each player are listed below.
Garrett Cleavinger (Falmouth Commodores/Cape Cod League)
Cleavinger had a solid week for the Commodores, appearing in two games and holding opponents scoreless. He pitched one inning and struck out two against Chatham, Monday and struck out the side in one inning pitched against Harwich, Wednesday. The outings brought his ERA to 6.75 through 12 innings pitched with a strikeout total of 21.
Scott Heineman (Brewster Whitecaps/Cape Cod League)
The Ducks’ starting right fielder in 2013 is batting .312 through 31 games. He leads the Whitecaps in at bats (141), hits (44), doubles (8), triples (3), home runs (2) and stolen bases (24). The junior-to-be has 12 multiple-hit games (in 32 played), including a 5-for-5 effort with a triple, three runs scored and three stolen bases on July 14 against Orleans. For the season, he has stolen multiple bases in six different games including three in a game twice. Heineman also played in the Cape Cod League All-Star Game, July 27. He represented the East, going 2-5 and crossing the plate to score one run.
Darrell Hunter (Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox/Cape Cod League)
A key member of Oregon’s bullpen in 2013, Hunter is 1-1 with 3.78 ERA and seven saves in 13 appearances for the Red Sox. He has 21 strikeouts in 18.0 innings pitched, while allowing just 19 hits. Hunter picked up the win over Brewster on June 29 striking out four in three innings of relief while not allowing any hits. In his last six outings, he has five saves with nine strikeouts.
Kevin Minjares (Conejo Oaks/California Collegiate League)
Kevin Minjares leads the Conejo Oaks with a .382 batting average in 24 games. Minjares, who batted .267 for Oregon last season, has led the Oaks to a 20-18 record this summer. Minjares has tallied 22 runs, 29 hits, two doubles and 10 RBI in 76 at bats for Conejo.
Nick Catalano (Alaska Goldpanners/Alaska Baseball League)
Nick Catalano has competed in 32 games for the Alaska Goldpanners, helping his side to a 22-13 record this summer. Catalano tallied a hit, a run and an RBI in a 6-4 Goldpanners win over the Pilots on Wednesday, and also scored a run in a 7-4 loss on Thursday. The Anaheim, Calif., native is batting .217 with 23 hits, 18 runs and 15 RBI. Catalano held a .237 batting average and started for 10 games for the Ducks last season.
Mitchell Tolman (Conejo Oaks/California Collegiate League)
Mitchell Tolman – Oregon’s freshman All-American last season – is batting .257 for the Conejo Oaks. Tolman has tallied 13 runs, 26 hits, 11 doubles and 20 RBI in 101 at bats this summer. Tolman tallied a hit in Conejo’s last game, a 9-3 loss to the SoCal Catch. Tolman batted .315 with 52 hits and 37 RBI for the Ducks last season.
Jared Priestley (Corvallis Knights/West Coast League)
Jared Priestly has pitched 12 innings for the Corvallis Knights this summer, as the Knights have improved to 28-17 and are winners of seven of their last 10 games. Priestly, a member of the Ducks’ bullpen in 2013 as a true freshman, hasn’t seen action since July 18th against Mid-Valley. He held the Rockets to one run on five hits in four innings worked. In 12 innings for the Knights, Priestly has allowed nine runs on 14 hits, while striking out six batters. Priestly had a 4.15 ERA for the Ducks last season.
