OKLAHOMA CITY – The Jim Thorpe Association announced Monday that University of Oregon cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu has been named one of 15 semifinalists for the 2013 Jim Thorpe Award, presented to the top defensive back in college football.

Ekpre-Olomu, a junior from Chino Hills, Calif., is the second-leading tackler for the No. 2 Ducks with 44 total stops, including 25 of the solo variety. He also has 2.0 tackles for loss and a pair of interceptions through the first eight games of the season.

Following Oregon’s 45-24 win at Washington Oct. 12, Huskies’ head coach Steve Sarkisian called Ekpre-Olomu “probably the best defensive player we’ve seen this season.”

An all-Pac-12 and third-team all-America selection in 2012, Ekpre-Olomu is also on watch lists for the Bednarik Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy.

Three Thorpe Award finalists will be named on Monday, Nov. 25, and the winner will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show Dec. 12 on ESPN. The winner of the 2013 Thorpe Award will be honored at a banquet in Oklahoma City on Feb. 4, 2014.

About the Jim Thorpe Award: The Thorpe Award is named after history’s greatest athlete, Jim Thorpe, and is presented by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Jim Thorpe Association in Oklahoma City. Thorpe excelled at every sport in which he competed, including football at which he played on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.
