Redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota (Mar-ee-oo-TAH) has been named the starting quarterback for the University of Oregon’s Sept. 1 season opener vs. Arkansas State in Autzen Stadium, head coach Chip Kelly announced Friday.

The 6-4, 211-pound Honolulu, Hawaii native becomes the school’s first freshman to start Oregon’s season opener since redshirt freshman Danny O’Neil did so in 1991 against Washington State.

Mariota edged sophomore Bryan Bennett for the starting berth, with Bennett completing 25 of 46 passes for 369 yards and six touchdowns in eight appearances a year ago, which included one start in a winning performance at Colorado.
