DALLAS -- University of Oregon running back Kenjon Barner is one of ten semifinalists for the 2012 Doak Walker Award, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors announced today.
Barner, a senior from Riverside, Calif., is tied for the national scoring lead at 13.33 points per game and ranks second in the FBS in rushing yards per game (143.89). This is despite the fact that only 69 of his 179 rushing attempts have come after halftime due to the lopsided nature of Oregon's victories during its 9-0 start.
Last week, Baner rushed for a school-record 321 yards on 38 carries (8.4 average) and five touchdowns as the second-ranked Ducks defeated then-No. 18 USC, 62-51. His five rushing touchdowns tied the Pac-12 single-game record and his 321 rushing yards represent the fourth-highest single-game total in conference history.
Oregon's third all-time leading rusher (3,151 yards), Barner is two touchdowns shy of former teammate LaMichael James' UO single-season standard of 21. James set that mark in 2010, when he became the Ducks' first Doak Walker Award recipient.
In addition to his 1,295 rushing yards this season, Barner has 15 receptions for 184 yards and a touchdown.
Three finalists will be announced Monday, Nov. 19, and the eventual recipient of the award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Thursday, Dec. 6, on ESPN.
