Oregon Head Coach Chip Kelly

On Marcus Mariota’s first collegiate game…

“Marcus really had command of our offense and it truly showed today. I am happy with his performance. Marcus showed a great deal of poise out there, it was really fun to watch him play tonight.”

On the team concept…

“We are far from a one man show, we all work together to get the win.”

On today’s game…

“Overall it was a good game. We got a lot of players in, so that will give us some good film to study next week. We have some areas to work on, but overall I am happy with the way our guys played tonight.”

On Bryan Bennett’s attitude…

“Bryan handled the news the way I thought he would. He is such a stronger competitor and he took the news as a challenge and it really showed in his practice effort the end of last week.”

Arkansas State Coach Gus Malzahn

On the team...
“Obviously we didn’t play very well. We made some mistakes. It was a tough first quarter, no doubt. “

“They [Oregon] are a good offense… We have to slow people down. I am proud of the fact that the second half we came back.”

“I was happy the way we came out the second half. In the first half, we shot ourselves in the foot. They [Oregon] were a very good defense and that was a discouraging fact for me. We had stupid penalties and that’s why we shot ourselves in the foot. “

“We got embarrassed in the first half. In the second half, they played like champions. They fought back hard. It’s a sign of change. I told them [the team] that it could be the shining moment of the season. A lot of younger teams would have wanted to get out of there, but they fought. I was very proud of them about that.”

On Mariota and Oregon’s offense...

“ We had an idea about their [Oregon’s] offense. They executed themselves well. They’re very well coached. They have speed in their positions but we obviously expected to do better than we did, definitely in the first half.”

On the positive points of the game...

“I’m one of those guys who, after a game, thinks of all the things they could have done better. I’d say right now, yeah, there was some good things but we have to do better. That’s our mindset.”

On the game plan for the future...

“Tomorrow coaches won’t get much sleep. That’s okay. We’ll get back to practice on Monday. We’ll play better.”

On his head coaching career...

“First game, we are playing with the best teams. We didn’t play too well in the first half, obviously, but bouncing back the second half... I like this team. I’ll tell you that, I like this team. And we’ll get better each week. I’ll promise you that.”

On Oregon...

“They’re champs. There’s no doubt. They’ll have a real chance.”

WR/RB De’Anthony Thomas

On the game…

“It was great, playing with this Oregon team. We are great. Offense is moving really well. We are definitely more of a tempo team and we have absolutely turned it up.”

On Marcus Mariota

“He has been making plays all summer and this has been his debut. I am happy for him. He’s a great player, a smart quarterback, and he makes great decisions.”

On his approach…

“I have been working hard with my team but we have a long season to go. Our tempo is up and we are ready to go.”

On the freshman…

“The freshman this year came in ready to play this season. A lot of talent and a lot of competition in each position this season.”

RB Kenjon Barner

On Marcus Mariota

“He is a great talent and very blessed.”

On how he thinks they played…

“We played well but we can perform a lot better than that. Tonight was us getting all of our nerves out but we are ready for next week.”

“Even though we moved the ball extremely well, we can definitely move it better. As a team we know what we are capable of.”

On the teams depth…

“Depth has always been a question from the medias standpoint about us. But we always laugh at that because we know our depth, we know what we have and we see it during practice. Depth is not an issue for us.”

OL Carson York

On Marcus Mariota

“That kid looked pretty good didn’t he? He was drilling them tonight. I remember seeing Darron’s [Thomas] first starts and how happy and excited he was after plays. Marcus was having the time of his life out there tonight and jumping around. He was very excited.”

On De’Anthony Thomas…

“It looks like he is playing with a little more confidence and he definitely doesn’t play like a freshman anymore.”

On approaching next weeks game…

“We have to do a better job in the second half because tonight the second half fell flat. There is a lot to improve on, as a team and myself personally. It’s a learning experience this one.”

WR Josh Huff

On what he thinks need to change…

“We need to get better. Everyone needs to be going with the same mind and we have to stay focused.”

On De’Anthony Thomas…

“There is a reason they call him the Black Mamba; he just strikes. I am always at a loss for words. It is so exciting to see him with the ball and play for our offense.”

QB Marcus Mariota

On feelings as the game started…

“I was very nervous at the beginning, but after the first snap all my butterflies went away and I just played the game.”

On the sack on the first series…

“It was my first time getting hit in nearly a year. It was good to get that hit out of the way so that I could focus on the game and play to the best of my ability.”

On taking leadership of the team…

“I looked to guys like Kenjon Barner and Dion Jordan to teach me and guide me on how to be the leader I need to be for the team.”

On taking the field for his first collegiate game…

“It was surreal running through the tunnel for the first time. I am from a small school so it was a bit of a shock to run out to 60,000 screaming fans. After the butterflies went away it was fun to see how crazy these fans are about their football, it made me relax and just have fun out there.
