OREGON COACH/PLAYER QUOTES

Head Coach Mark Helfrich

On the team's performance...
“Defensively we played really well. They did a nice job of managing the clock and trying to get as much out of that as they could to keep the offense on the field and try to dial up a couple plays offensively for them.”

On the special teams...
“Hit and miss. You know, we saw a touchback. We had to maybe explain that rule for some of the people. We made a field goal, which was good. Our plan going in was to alternate Alejandro (Maldonado) and Matt (Wogan) in place kick situations. We never punted so that never became an issue but Alejandro (Maldonado) has been practicing really well all fall."

“I thought our preparation to this point has been outstanding. I’m really happy with how guys performed today and also worked during fall camp. Now it’s sort of where you get in the game routine for the next game coming up”

On Terrance Mitchell's ejection...
“To my understanding the foul itself is not reviewable, but the ejection is reviewable. The criteria to eject is the part where there is a little bit of a grey area. Basically if the guy is ejected, if there is any contact to the head by any other part, in that case the defender, it’s an ejection. We have been harping on that all fall camp. From my angle it looked like a foul. We need to coach it better. That’s on us. It’s a rule and we need to play by the rules.”

“They way I understand the ruling is he is only ejected for this game. If the foul happens in the second half, then it’s this game and the first half of the next game.”

“In the first game as a head coach you kind of try to keep it simple because you know there is going to be a high level of anxiety.”

On his first game as Oregon's head coach...
“It was great. It’s a tremendous sense of confidence being around our guys and our staff. It was just a great team win.”

On communicating with Coach Scott Frost...
“I thought he did a great job. That was one thing we are working through. We haven’t done this before and it was good that a game of this nature worked itself out and we got through some of those kinks where I’m yelling on top of him and he’s yelling on top of me, but that’s a good thing. That’s how we like to do it. But, I thought he did a good job. The stuff we need to clean up has nothing to do with that part of it (Coach Frost).”

On his thoughts walking out on the field...
“I had my arm around Marcus Mariota and I felt really good.”

“That’s my first game being on the field since 1996. It’s different regarding more of the game management part of it. It’s a completely different energy being on the field with the crowd and our players which is a lot more fun.

“De'Anthony is special. Talk about a guy that had an awesome fall camp. He really grew up helping some of these other guys like Thomas (Tyner) and showing them how to practice. It’s amazing how much more mature he is. Everything about him is better. That’s a good thing when you are that good to begin with.”

RB De'Anthony Thomas
On the opening game…
“We came out hard today. It was great to get back in the rhythm again. It was a great feeling to just be out there, making plays, and driving the ball down the field.”

On Coach Mark Helfrich
“Coach Helfrich knows what he is doing. He is just looking to win. He mixed it up a bit and it was a great feeling to get the ball around.”

On his performance…
“I’m going with the flow. Whatever the coaches say, I’ll do it. I just want to focus on getting stronger and being there for my team.”

On the team’s performance…
“We have a lot of work to do. The chemistry is going good, but I feel like we can get better.  I’m just looking forward to next week and getting back out to practice on Monday”

WR Bralon Addison
On the opening game…
“We’re pretty happy about the win. It feels great to come out and play a great game. We have a lot of new guys out there and we have a lot of room to grow. With opening games, there are a lot of mistakes. We just need to look at film and get back to working hard at practice on Monday.”

K/P Matt Wogan
On his first game…
“I had a great time. I wish some kicks went better. I wouldn’t say I’m satisfied, but it was a great experience. I’m a freshman and it was a lot of fun. Coach Osborne made sure I was having fun and I definitely did.”

On sharing his position with Alejandro Maldonado
“The competition is there and every day we’re competing. We both weren’t as good coming in, but we both have been working hard since then, so we both deserve to be out there.”

WR Josh Huff
On playing in the back field…
“It was a flashback to my freshman year being on the back field. It felt good to be back there putting pressure on the defense and helping De’Anthony (Thomas) and Marcus (Mariota) to give them a different look.”

On the opening game…
“Just getting the season underway and seeing the players react in certain situations, it was definitely fun.”

On his performance…
“I took a couple plays off when the ball went away from me and that’s unacceptable. I just have to continue to improve and not take plays off a ball that’s not coming my way.”

 On the wide receivers…
“The receivers we have do an outstanding job with everything. When we get the chance to get the ball in the air, we are going to make the most of it. Each one of the guys is talented and to be able to showcase it today sets the tone for the rest of the season. Most definitely, our wraps were more crisp.”

RB Byron Marshall
On his touchdown rush…
“It was a great play call and it was set up great. I had a good block out there by a receiver. Coach Helfrich says don’t let one guy tackle you, and I took that to heart.”

On Oregon’s number 3 ranking…
“We’re starting legacies now. It’s a new beginning today. A lot of things are starting to change and I guess this is the first of many.”

LB Boseko Lokombo
On the opening game...
“It was a lot of fun out there, the defense really played well. From the secondary to the line, everyone kind of felt comfortable and played really well.

“It gives us confidence for Virginia next week.We need to working on our positioning and make sure we’re playing well. We just have to get back out on Monday”

NICHOLLS COACH/PLAYER QUOTES

Head Coach Charlie Stubbs
On Oregon getting off to a quick start…
"There’s no question. We knew that they’d present us problems. It’s hard to simulate Oregon’s offense in practice. They were so fast. Also, if you make a mistake, they have such skilled athletes and will make you pay. I thought our guys hung in there really well and didn’t quit. I commend them for that, and that’s something for us to build on."

On having positive drives that stalled out in the end…
"There were times on offense where we moved the ball well on them. We had one or two plays that would cost us to not be able to finish the drive, which is a great teaching point. I commend Oregon about this; they had the 12th man. The 12th man is the crowd, and they were loud and that’s another thing that we can’t simulate. They’re a knowledgeable crowd and knew when it was a crucial down. I know for sure we won’t go into a more hostile environment then what we have right here."

On Oregon’s explosive offense…
"That offense will match up against any defense in the nation. There were things we could have done to contain them. If you contain their offense from the outside in, at least you’re allowed to get your pursuit there to make a tackle. They broke the perimeter on us quite offense, and when they got out in space – that’s they’re whole offense – get the playmakers out in space and make the defense make an open field tackle. If he doesn’t make the play, it’s a big gain for them."

On having positives despite the lopsided score…
"The big motto of our game plan was that the Colonels don’t beat the Colonels. We were trying to take care of the football and minimize penalties so that the Ducks have to beat us straight up. But, they’re the third-ranked team contending for a national championship. There’s sometimes we do everything we can, but still that’s not enough."

RB Marcus Washington

On his 132 all-purpose yards…
"Before the game, coach told me the running back is going to catch at least ten passes in this game. Coaches told us to go out there and think that you are going to get the ball on every play."

On Kalen Henderson’s performance…
"I feel like starting the game, Beaux came in and was doing tremendous. We were moving the ball with Beaux in. Kalen came in, and that brings diversity to our offense. He’s a runner, and he can throw the ball. Bringing him in opened a lot in the running game."

On his approach to the game, and his opinion of Oregon’s performance…
"I feel like I went out there and just tried to give it everything I had. This is my senior season, and we were playing one of the best teams in the nation, if not the best. I just went out there and gave it everything I had. My hat is off to them (Oregon). They are a great team offensively and defensively. They’re able to score at any time on offense, and they’re defense is good. I feel like they’re going to have a great season this year, and us Colonels are going to go out and have a great season, too."

QB Kalen Henderson

On getting into the game so quickly…
"Coming into the game, coach said he was going to play both quarterbacks. I think initially he was going to have us play in separate quarters. My time came a little quicker than expected, but I was able to go in prepared and I think we did some positive things today."

On having success in spurts despite the lopsided score…
"All day on offense, minus the first couple drives when we went three-and-out, we were moving the ball pretty well I thought. It was just when we got into the red zone after those big plays, there was either a penalty or miscommunication. There was always just one play that kept us from getting to the end zone. I think we’ll polish those things up in practice next week and be ready to go for Western Michigan."

On starting the season with such a tough opponent…
"It was definitely a challenge. Oregon’s a great team, and there’s a reason why they’re No. 3 in the country. I think we took the challenge really well today. We did some good things on offense and our defense played really well. There were some good things to build on. We don’t have to see the Oregon Ducks in our conference, so I think we’ll be good to go."

CB Byron Cobb

On the team’s result and moving forward…
"Coming into the game, we knew Oregon was going to be the toughest team we play all season. We just tried to do what we can, and now we’ll look at the film, and build from the positives and work on the negatives."

On the challenges of defending Oregon…
"Oregon have a lot of playmakers, so they can buy time. When we were doing our job, they were still doing there’s. They’re the No. 3 team in the nation, and they came out ready."
