Oregon is up to No. 2 in The Associated Press poll of media, the earliest in a season the Ducks have ever been ranked as high.

This week’s poll was released Tuesday to account for college games Sunday and Monday that took advantage of an open week prior to the start of the NFL regular season. Typically, the top 25 is updated on Sunday of each week.

The Ducks, who beat Nicholls 66-3 this past weekend, trail only defending national champion Alabama in the newest AP top 25, matching the results of the poll following last season’s bowl games. Ohio State slipped from No. 2 to No. 3 despite a 40-20 win over Buffalo.

This is the third season in the last four in which Oregon reached No. 2 in the AP poll. The Ducks hit that spot on Sept. 23 of the 2012 season, and on Oct. 10 of 2010. In each case, Oregon eventually reached No. 1.

The Ducks also reached No. 2 in the 2007 and 2001 polls.

Oregon takes its new ranking on the road this week, to face Virginia on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. PT. The game will be nationally televised, with viewers able to find it on ABC or ESPN2 depending on the region of the country in which they live.

A coverage map is anticipated soon.
