TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 20 University of Oregon volleyball team (16-8, 4-8) opened its three-match road swing with a 3-0 loss at No. 23 University of Arizona (17-7, 6-5) Friday night at the McKale Center.

The Wildcats got back on the winning track at home with a 25-12, 25-16, 27-25 decision to end a four-match home losing streak against top-10 league rivals, three of which had come in five sets.

UA hit .344 compared to .103 for UO, and held advantages in kills (43-34), digs (45-34) and blocks (12-3), while Oregon won the service ace comparison (3-1).

Duck freshman middle blocker Ariana Williams led the team in hitting (.250) and blocks (2) for the team-leading eighth and 12th times this season, respectively, and added seven kills – second-most on the team Friday.

Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Alaina Bergsma returned to her home state and led the team in kills (11) for the fifth time this campaign and posted her ninth double-digit kill figure of the season.

Senior outside hitter Heather Meyers logged one of UO’s three aces, and moved into a tie for sixth all-time for UO in a season in the category with Barb Lutz who also posted 53 in 1983.

Meyers’ 166th ace career-wise also moved her into sole possession of third all-time on the Pac-10 career list - only five behind former two-time national player of the year Logan Tom of Stanford (second, 171).

Among other Duck stats, freshman setter Lauren Plum ended with 31 assists, seven digs, an ace and a block, and sophomore libero Haley Jacob’s 11 digs led UO for the 20th time in ‘10.

Two UA starters hit over .400 – Whitney Dosty (11 kills, .476) and Cursty Jackson (12 kills, .474), and Jackson added five blocks. Other Wildcat category leaders included Kaylen Bannister (6 blocks), Marketa Hanzlova (1 ace, 10 digs), Paige Weber (37 assists) and Courtney Karst (10 digs).

In the first set, UA posted an 84 percent sideout ratio and had six runs of three points or more, including a run of four mid-set that included three straight kills by Whitney Dosty to give UA an 11-6 lead. In comparison, UO led only once, 1-0, and its only multi-point run – two points – drew it within 6-5 early before it ultimately lost 25-12.

UO hung tough early in the second set  and staked its last lead of the match with Meyers’ kill that made it 8-7. Altogether, the two teams were tied 10 times through 11-11 when UA went on a four-point burst to go up 15-11 on two Duck attack errors, a UA block and Tiffany Owens’ kill. UA added another four-point run to go up 21-15, then ended the set with four straight points to win 25-16.

In the third set, UO never led but was tied 13 times through 25-25 when UA ended the match with two straight points on a Jackson kill and Duck attack error to win 27-25 and post its fourth straight win over UO.

In other action around the league Friday night, No. 7 USC beat No. 2 Cal, 3-1, in Berkeley; No. 3 Stanford won, 3-1, at home against No. 10 UCLA; No. 11 Washington swept Washington State in Pullman; and Arizona State won in straight sets vs. Oregon State in Tempe.
