EUGENE – For the second straight season, University of Oregon junior Katherine Fischer was rewarded for her excellence in the classroom and on the court Thursday with Capital One Academic All-District volleyball team honors in an announcement by CoSIDA.
Fischer, an outside hitter from Los Altos, Calif., was tabbed to the six-person first team, and the accounting major was one of three honorees with 4.0 cumulative GPA’s.
On the court, the versatile player leads the team in aces (tied-0.20 p/s), and ranks second in kills (2.90 p/s), points (3.28 p/s), digs (2.87 p/s) and double-doubles (7). She has logged the team’s season high in aces vs. Utah (4) that also ties for sixth-best in the Pac-12 this year.
Among the team’s 24 matches, she has paced the team in kills in 10 contests, and led the team in other categories multiples times in points (7 times), hitting (4), aces (3), blocks (3) and digs (3).
Her all-district honor was the sixth under seventh-year head coach Jim Moore. Former setter Nevena Djordjevic picked up similar second- and third-team honors in 2008 and ’09, former middle blocker Kristin Bitter was a first-team choice in ’06, and Fischer and junior Kellie Kawasaki were first- and third-team selections last fall.
Prior to Moore’s arrival, only one other Duck had picked up academic all-district honors – former setter Casey Crisler in 1995, ’96 and ’97.
Fischer is now eligible for the national volleyball Academic All-America team that is voted on by collegiate sports information directors and announced later this month.
At Matthew Knight Arena this weekend, the No. 20 Ducks (17-7, 10-6) hosts No. 1 UCLA on Friday (11/11) at 7 p.m. PT, and No. 4 USC on Saturday (11/12) at 8:30 p.m. PT.
Before the USC match, fans that have tickets (or Duck students that have their student ID’s) can come to a special ‘Watch Party’ for the Oregon-Stanford football game that starts at 5 p.m.
