OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Thanks to her excellence on and off the court, University of Oregon redshirt senior Alaina Bergsma was selected as one of 10 finalists for the NCAA’s Senior CLASS Award for players from the 330 Division 1 volleyball teams.

The All-America outside hitter from Chandler, Ariz., was one of two Pac-12 players with UCLA’s Rachael Kidder chosen from the 30 nominees announced last month.

Fan votes will be combined with media and head coaches’ votes to determine the winner that will be announced at the NCAA Championship, December 13-15 in Louisville, Kent.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete, and recognizes players based on the categories of community, classroom, character and competition

Off the court, Bergsma has served more than 100 community hours the past 12 months with a host of local organizations. Besides helping with fund-raising for the Children's Miracle Network in Oregon, KIDSPORTS, Oregon Medical Group and Homeless Connect, she has made numerous appearances at local junior and high schools, and helped with open prep gyms last spring.

In the classroom, she was a Pac-12 All-Academic Second-Team choice in 2011, thanks to her 3.60 cumulative GPA in business administration.

This week, the All-Pac-12 player ranks seventh nationally in points (5.18 per set) and kills (4.63 p/s), 66th in hitting (.348) and 80th in aces (0.36 p/s). In the Pac-12, she leads in points, and ranks second in kills and eighth in hitting. All-time for UO, she stands seventh all-time in career points (1216.5), and 10th in career kills (1,099).

Among No. 3 Oregon’s 17 matches in 2012, she has led the team in kills and points a team-high 10 and nine times each, and in aces seven contests. Among her 14 +.300 totals, seven have been +.400,and she has landed double-digit kill totals in the last 13 matches (including three with a team season high 23).
