WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – The No. 6 University of Oregon volleyball program was again recognized as one of the nation’s top teams in the classroom as a program-best seven student-athletes were honored to Pac-12 Conference All-Academic Teams Wednesday.

Senior outside hitter Katherine Fischer picked up her third straight first-team honor, while senior defensive specialist Kellie Kawasaki received her first, second-team distinction after a pair of honorable mention laurels.

Four other Ducks were named as honorable mentions. Seniors Alaina Bergsma and Haley Jacob and junior Lauren Plum received their second honors, and sophomores Liz Brenner and Shellsy Ashen were named for the first time.

Fischer entered the fall term with a 4.01 cumulative grade point average, and was one of two honorees on the top two teams that sported a +4.00 GPA. The accounting major also became the third Duck to ever receive three first-team honors with former players Kristen Bitter (2004-06) and Casey Crisler (1995-97).

Oregon’s pair of first and second-team selections ranked second-most in the league just behind Oregon State (3).

Overall counting all three league academic teams, the Ducks’ seven combined selections tied UCLA for second-most behind OSU (9), and other school tallies follow: California (6), Arizona State (5), Stanford (5), Utah (5), Washington (5), Washington State (5), Colorado (4), USC (4), Arizona (1).

Wednesday’s honors raised UO's tally of conference all-academic honors to 37 in eight years under head coach Jim Moore. In prior years, Oregon received at least three honors in 2012 (7), ‘11 (5), ‘10 (6), ‘08 (4), ‘07 (4), '06 (4) and '05 (5), and two in ‘09.

To be eligible, players must sport a 3.00 minimum grade point average, be a returnee, at least a sophomore academically, and be a starter or significant contributor.

A complete list of honorees follows below, and more information is available at the www.Pac-12.com website.

In other academic-related news, Bergsma and Fischer were accorded Capital One Academic All-District First-Team honors two weeks ago. The duo are now eligible for the national Academic All-America squad announced in mid-December, and Fischer was a first- and third-team Academic All-American in 2011 and ’10, respectively.

On the court, the Ducks (24-4, 15-4) have equally been equally up to par in the nation’s top volleyball conference and are tied for second place with one match remaining. In national polls this year, UO has ranked top-10 nationally for 11 straight weeks, including five top-three appearances, and 10, top-five nods.

Among on-court notes for the academically-honored Ducks, Plum is the national leader in assists this week; Bergsma ranks fifth nationally in both kills and points (and first in the league); Fischer stands fourth in the Pac-12 in aces; Jacob ranks fifth in the league in digs; and Brenner stands 10th in the conference in both kills and points.

Later in the week, Oregon wraps up the regular slate with a Civil War clash at Oregon State (14-17, 4-15) Friday night at 8 p.m. The match will also be televised live on the Pac-12 Oregon TV Network.

Two days after the Civil War, the 64-team NCAA tournament will be announced on Sunday, November 25 at 1 p.m. Pacific Time by ESPNU, and on the www.NCAAsports.com website.

Afterward, 16 sites across the nation will host the four-team NCAA First and Second Rounds next Thursday-Sunday, November 30–December 2.
