EUGENE – After poishing off arguably its greatest regular season, the #5-seeded University of Oregon volleyball team (27-4, 16-4) placed three athletes on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region Team for the second time ever.

Redshirt senior outside hitter Alaina Bergsma was a repeat selection to the 14-person All-Pacific Region Team comprised of players from the Pac-12, Big Sky and West Coast Conferences. Junior setter Lauren Plum picked up her first honor after an honorable mention accolade in 2011, and sophomore outside hitter Liz Brenner also was accorded her first honor.

Senior libero Haley Jacob added her first honorable mention accolade, and was one of two liberos spotted among the 20 players selected overall.

Altogether, the Pac-12 sported the most first-team honorees conference-wise (10), and also had three of the six honorable mentions. Team-wise, Oregon tied for most honors with USC (3), and three other Pac-12 programs boasted honorees - Stanford (2), UCLA (1) and Washington (1).

In this week’s national rankings, the Pac-12 Player of the Year Bergsma ranked fifth nationally in kills (4.92 per set) and points (5.44 p/s) and led the nation’s top conference in both categories. In hitting, she stood eighth in the league (.338), and has 23 +.300 hitting totals (and 10 +.400). Her top two kill totals of the season vs. Washington State (32) and Washington (31) also top the Pac-12 this season.

Also an All-Pac-12 Team pick, Brenner stood top 80 nationally this week in kills (74th, 3.86 per set) and points (77th, 4.32 ps), and 10th in the Pac-12 in kills and points. Among her 12 +.300 hitting totals on the season, seven have been +.500, including a season high at USC (.577, 16 kills). Overall in 2012, she has led the team in hitting in 11 matches, and points and kills seven times.

A USA A2 National Team member and All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention, Jacob stands third in the Pac-12 in digs in league action (4.76 p/s) and fifth for all matches combined (4.37 p/s). Among her 22 career +20-dig matches, seven others have come this year (including six in Pac-12 play). All-time for UO, the three-year starter ranks second career-wise in digs (1,502) and digs per set (3.97), and has paced the squad in digs in 24 matches.

The Pac-12 Setter of the Year, Plum again tops the nation this week in assists (13.26) and owns the Pac-12’s first- and third-best match totals of 2012 at No. 6 Washington (75) and vs. California (66). In league play, her assists per set average is even higher (13.54), and she stands 10th-best in Pac-12-only play in aces (0.25 p/s). Under her direction, the Ducks ranked first team-wise in the nation this week in kills (15.94 per set) and ninth in hitting (.295).

Earlier this year, Bergsma was tabbed the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week three times, and Plum and Brenner each picked up single honors (as well as senior outside hitter Katherine Fischer). In October, Plum repeated AVCA National Player of the Week honors – the sixth Duck honoree in school history in as many years.

The complete All-Region Team listing follows below, and a complete AVCA All-Region release is available at the following URL address: http://www.avca.org/awards/regional-awards/division-one/

Bergsma, Brenner and Plum will now be considered for the AVCA's All-America teams that will be announced next week.

All-time under eighth-year head coach Jim Moore, nine Ducks have now combined for 14 all-region honors the last six seasons. Other recent all-region nods went to All-Americans Neticia Enesi (2008, '09), Gorana Maricic (2007, '08) and Sonja Newcombe (2008, '09). Two other of his pupils - Nevena Djordjevic and Heather Meyers - were honorable mention choices in 2009 and '10, respectively.

In that span, UO claimed its first trio of same-season honors in 2008, thanks to Enesi, Maricic and Newcombe.

Between 1978-89, seven other Ducks combined for 11 all-region honors – Michele Krebsbach (1986-2nd, ‘88-1st, ’89-1st), Teri Kramer (1986-1st, ’87-1st), Lauri Krejcha (1987-1st), Karen Beamer (1980-2nd, 1981-2nd), Cathy Hill (1981-2nd), Tamra Chambers (1979-1st) and Sue Stadler (1978-1st).

Last week, the Ducks hosted NCAA Tournament opening round action for the third time ever and first time since 1986 (with the other coming in 1984).

UO opened with a 3-0 victory over Big Sky tourney champion Northern Colorado, and raised its record in NCAA opening round action to 4-2 under Jim Moore (and 5-5 overall since its first NCAA trip in 1984). The next night, Oregon also swept No. 13-AVCA ranked Dayton to end the Atlantic-10 champion’s 19-match win streak in the team’s first-ever meeting.

Sporting their highest-ever NCAA seeding, the #5 Ducks have tied their school record for wins (27), and claimed a best-ever Pac-12 finish (second, 16-4).

Oregon looks ahead to its fourth-ever NCAA Regional Round of 16 match against #12 seed BYU (28-3, 13-3) Friday afternoon in Omaha at 2 p.m. Pacific Time.

The winner of that match plays on Saturday at 4 p.m. vs. the winner of Friday evening’s match between #4 Nebraska and #13 Washington.

All three regional matches will be video-streamed live by ESPN3.com and Saturday’s match will also be televised by ESPNU.
