The University of Oregon volleyball team (30-5, 16-4) celebrated its greatest season ever in 2012. Seeded #5 in the NCAA tournament, UO advanced to the NCAA final against #3 seed Texas for its best NCAA placing (and bettered its previous postseason best of three Round of 16 trips).

In the NCAA semifinal in Louisville, Oregon beat its third top-ranked foe the last two years with its 3-1 victory over Penn State. In prior postseason contests, UO swept Northern Colorado and AVCA-No. 13 ranked Dayton the opening weekend in Eugene, then bested #12 seed BYU and #4 seed Nebraska by 3-1 counts in the third and fourth rounds in Omaha.

Oregon’s runner-up Pac-12 placing was its highest ever – two spots better than its previous best – while its overall and Pac-12 win tallies (30/16) also were school records. The Ducks beat a record three top-two foes this year (No. 1 Penn State, No. 2 USC and No. 2 Washington), and logged six more wins vs. top-25 foes (No. 7 UCLA, No. 10 Kentucky, No. 10 Nebraska, No. 13 Dayton, No. 16 BYU and No. 24 Ohio State).

Four months after it was tabbed No. 20 in the preseason, the Ducks ended the year ranked second nationally in the AVCA poll. That final polling was its best-ever season finale and was among nine, top-five rankings on the fall (including four No. 2 rankings, two pollings each at No. 3 and No. 4, and another at No. 5). Overall during head coach Jim Moore’s eight-year tenure, Oregon has now been ranked top 25 for 88 editions, including 53 in the top 15, and all 26 of the team’s ever top-10 honors.

Redshirt senior outside hitter Alaina Bergsma won the team’s first AVCA National Player of the Year, Honda Award for volleyball, and Pac-12 Volleyball Player of the Year laurels.

Bergsma and junior setter Lauren Plum were honored as AVCA First-Team All-Americans, and sophomore outside hitter Liz Brenner became the team’s first underclass All-American with her Second-Team honor. All three players were also All-Pac-12 and All-Region picks, and Plum also received UO’s first Pac-12 Setter of the Year award.

Senior Haley Jacob was a USA Volleyball A2 National Team selection and an All-Pac-12 honorable mention.

Plum led the nation in assists (13.37 per set), and directed UO to a 15.95 kills per set average – tops nationally among teams. Oregon’s .289 hitting mark tied its school record and stood ninth nationally and second in the Pac-12. Conference-wise, UO also ranked second team-wise in aces (1.36 p/s) and third in digs (15.18 p/s)

Other Duck individuals ranked nationally stat-wise included Brenner (kills, 69th, 3.92 p/s; points, 70th, 4.39 p/s), junior middle blocker Ariana Williams (hitting, 84th, .334), Bergsma (hitting, 108th, .325) and Jacob (digs, 127th, 4.45 p/s).

Bergsma led the Pac-12 in points and kills averages as did Plum in assists. Bergsma also stood 10th in hitting (.325), and others ranked top 10 in the conference included Jacob (digs, fifth, 4.45 p/s), Williams (hitting, seventh, .334) and senior outside hitter Katherine Fischer (aces, ninth, 0.26 p/s).

Fischer and Bergsma were tabbed Capital One Academic All-America First- and Third-Team honorees, thanks to their 4.01 and 3.60 cumulative grade point averages. Fischer earned her third national honor after First- and Third-Team honors in 2011 and ’10, and Bergsma’s award was her first.

In weeks prior, the Pac-12 Senior Scholar-Athlete winner Fischer received her third Academic All-District plaque, and Bergsma picked up her first honor. Fischer and senior defensive specialist Kellie Kawasaki were Pac-12 All-Academic First- and Second-Team choices, and five others were honorable mentions (Bergsma, Jacob, Plum, Brenner and sophomore Shellsy Ashen).

Bergsma won three Pac-12 Player of the Week awards in 2012 to up her career tally to six - a Duck all-time best. Liz Brenner and Lauren Plum also won single honors on the season, and Plum added her second national weekly AVCA honor.

Oregon head coach Jim Moore scored his 500th career win in his 24 collegiate season, and ended the campaign with a 517-242 overall mark. For the Ducks, his eight-year 166-86 record ranks third best for wins and best percentage-wise (.659).

With its second-best attendance mark ever (5,007) in November vs. then-No. 1 Stanford, UO welcomed eight of its top-25 all-time biggest home crowds in league or postseason tilts in 2012. Others came vs. then-No. 2 Washington (#3, 3,978), Northern Colorado (#9, 3,038), Washington State (#10, 2,928), No. 13 Dayton (#12, 2,696), Oregon State (#17, 2,355), California (#22, 2,011) and UCLA (#23, 1,964). Altogether, the Ducks have played in front of 23 of the 29 largest home volleyball crowds ever at Matthew Knight Arena and McArthur Court.

The Ducks started the year with a 14-match win streak to tie its program all-time best.
