EUGENE, Ore. – Some Oregon volleyball greats will be returning to Eugene for the annual alumni scrimmage, Saturday at 7 p.m. Both parking and admission are free at Matt Knight Arena.
Among the slated alumni to return are 2012 AVCA National Player of the Year, Alaina Bergsma, All-American Sonja Newcombe and Oregon career digs leader Katie Swoboda.
Prior to the start of the match the team will honor former volunteer assistant coach Matt Hartner, who passed away last week at the age of 30. Hartner had played an integral role with Oregon volleyball since he joined the team as an undergraduate manager in 2002. He remained with the program throughout his time as a student at Oregon until he graduated in 2006, serving as an undergraduate assistant coach during his final year.
While Hartner was always a constant with Oregon volleyball, he officially rejoined the staff for the 2009 season as a volunteer assistant after leading the Mt. Hood Community College volleyball team in 2008.
The exhibition will be the last before the start of the regular season, which kicks off Friday, Aug. 29 against Ohio State on the Pac-12 Networks.
The match will give fans a better chance to see the Ducks at full strength after the Green and Yellow Scrimmage which split the squad, and likely the starting lineup heading into the season. But with a week still remaining, head coach Jim Moore will continue to evaluate what gives the team the best chance to win.
Earlier this week, Moore spoke to what started as an open competition between setters Shellsy Ashen and Maggie Scott, could turn into a strategic change with two setters on the floor, as both have impressed during the preseason camp.
Tickets for the 2014 season are on sale and can be purchased online here.Alumni Playing Roster
