OREGON FROSH LEADS THE NATION IN REBOUNDING
Jillian Alleyne, a freshman from Fontana, Calif., leads the nation in rebounds (14.8 rpg) according the NCAA stats report issued on Dec. 3.
Texas sophomore Nneka Enemkpali and Central Arkansas forward Megan Herbert are tied for second (14.0 rpg) nearly a full rebound behind Alleyne.
Alleyne’s one of just two freshmen who rank in the top 50 nationally, joined by Oakland’s Olivia Nash who is grabbing 11.0 rebounds per night.
Alleyne has a pair of 20-plus rebound efforts through the first six games of the season. She came off the bench to grab a game-high 23 boards, eight of the offensive variety, in 32 minutes of action against No. 13 Oklahoma. She grabbed a school and Pac-12 record 27 rebounds in a double-overtime loss to Portland State on Nov. 15.
The NCAA record for season rebounding average by a freshman is 15.5 rpg (1985 – Valorie Whiteside, Appalachian State).
DUCKS PLAYING SHORTHANDED IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY
Oregon is now limited to a seven-player rotation and is playing without four starters midway through the non-conference portion of the schedule.
Laura Stanulis and Lexi Petersen have been ruled out for the rest of the season due to injury. They were two of UO’s top five scorers prior to getting hurt. Stanulis also led the team in assists (33) at the time of her injury. Petersen played in just one game this year, but she averaged a team-leading 17.5 points per game on UO’s preseason foreign tour to Spain.
Injuries have also sidelined key returners Ariel Thomas and Deanna Weaver, as well as freshman Janitah Iamaleava who has yet to play a game in a UO uniform. Iamaleava is scheduled to make her return some time this season.
Thomas was the third-leading scorer on last year’s team (8.9 ppg), while Weaver ranked fifth (6.7 ppg). Weaver also ranked second on the team in 3-point percentage (24-of-66, .364) for players who had 15 or more attempts.
Three-sport standout Liz Brenner (volleyball/women’s basketball/softball), a sophomore who played in 21 games and started eight contests for UO a year ago, is still competing with the Ducks’ volleyball team and isn’t yet available for basketball competition.
Oregon is also without the services of Katelyn Loper who transferred to UO this summer and is not eligible for competition until the 2013-14 season.
OREGON TO PLAY FIVE GAMES IN THIRTEEN DAYS
The Ducks, who opened the regular season on Nov. 11 against Saint Mary’s, played their first six games over a 22 day period (Nov. 11 through Dec. 2).
Oregon now faces the busiest portion of the 2012-13 schedule as the Ducks will play five games over a 13-day period. Two of those games will be played on the road.
Following Sunday’s contest with the Wolf Pack, UO will travel to the Midwest to face Illinois on Wednesday, Dec. 12. Oregon, which has a 2-0 lead in the all-time series, has never played the Illini in Champaign.
The Ducks will then head back to Eugene where they will host a pair of games with Fresno State on Sunday, Dec. 16 before battling Samford on Monday, Dec. 18.
Oregon finishes this stretch in the schedule with a road contest against Portland on Thursday, Dec. 21.
ALLEYNE BREAKS PAC-12 REBOUNDING RECORD
Jillian Alleyne broke the school and Pac-12 Conference rebounding record in UO’s double-overtime home loss to Portland State.
In the same game, just her second as a collegiate player, Alleyne also matched the school record for points in a game with 38.
The 27 rebounds bettered the previous Pac-12 mark set nearly 20 years ago by UCLA’s Natalie Williams in 1994. Alleyne’s rebounding total is the 24th-highest single-game total in NCAA history (since 1982). Alleyne’s mark also took down UO’s 34-year-old mark that had stood since 1978.
Alleyne scored 30 of her 38 points, and grabbed 21 of her 27 rebounds in the second half and the two overtime periods. In fact, Alleyne amassed a double-double in the two overtime periods alone (10 points and 10 rebounds).
On the game, Alleyne went 13-of-24 on field goals and made 12-of-19 free throw attempts. She also contributed team-bests with four steals and three blocks.
