EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Oregon soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with No. 19 Southern California Sunday afternoon at Pape’ Field in Eugene.
The Trojans (8-4-3, 1-2-1 Pac-10) had two penalty kick opportunities in the match, scoring on their second attempt which came in the 81st minute. The game-tying goal was a result of Oregon junior goalkeeper Lindsay Parlee being called for a foul in the 18-yard box. USC midfielder Ashli Sandoval converted the penalty kick for her fourth goal of the season.
The match went to extra time where Oregon (4-7-3, 0-2-1 Pac-10) out-shot USC by a margin of 6-2 during the two overtime periods, but neither team found the net before finishing with the tie.
“I thought that we came out well and continued to play hard - playing to win the game throughout the entire 90 and into the overtime,” head coach Tara Erickson said in recapping the match. “To me this is the grittiest performance for every player on our team. Everyone that came onto the field today really performed well offensively and defensively.”
Oregon took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when senior forward Jen Stoltenberg scored her 10th goal of the season and 31st of her career (which ranks tied for second all-time at UO). Sophomore midfielder Scout Libke played a precise through-ball to Stoltenberg working through the center of the USC defense. Stoltenberg broke away from defenders and beat USC goalkeeper Shelby Church 1 v 1 for the goal.
“Scout’s touch and vision on the field - she’s one of the best in the Pac-10,” Erickson said of the Libke assist. “It was a perfectly timed and weighted ball through to Stolt, who finished the way she does.”
Stoltenberg nearly gave the Ducks a 2-0 advantage in the 65th minute of play when she cracked a line-drive (from 35 yards out) off the cross bar.
Just four minutes later, the Ducks were whistled for a hand ball in the 18-yard box resulting in the first penalty kick for USC. Defender Karter Haug hit the post on her attempt allowing UO to maintain the 1-0 lead.
UO freshman forward Brynne Konkel almost had the game-winner for the Ducks in the 87th minute, but her header attempt was saved by Church.
As Oregon's offensive leader once again, Stoltenberg finished with a match-high six shots (two on goal) in playing the full 110 minutes. Senior defender Bree Rowe and sophomore defender Lauren Thompson joined Libke, Parlee and Stoltenberg as those who played the duration of the match.
“Those guys are the backbone and grit of the team. They not only kept us in it, but to play that hard and to play to win the game for 110 minutes. Is very impressive mentally and physically,” Erickson said.
Parlee faced 12 USC shots in the contest, recording two saves while allowing the penalty kick goal. She was given a yellow card in the 69th minute (dissent) immediately following the first penalty kick awarded to USC.
“Parlee is like having a fifth defender out on the field,” Erickson said. “She’s aggressive inside her 18-yard box. I like the way she helps to minimize shots. They (shots) do not even happen because the way she plays.”
Church recorded four saves, allowing one goal, in playing 110 minutes at goalkeeper for the Trojans. Sandoval had a team-best three shots, scoring on her only attempt on goal.
The Ducks had the edge over the Trojans in shots (16-12) and shots on goal (6-3). USC had 11 corner kicks to Oregon’s seven.
Oregon (4-7-3, 0-2-1 Pac-10) will continue conference play next weekend with matches at Washington and Washington State. The Ducks-Huskies contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, while the UO-WSU match will be played at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
“I think that we will take our energy and confidence from this weekend and build on it for next weekend. Even though we come away with a loss and a tie, this gives us confidence moving forward.”
