DAVIS, Calif. – The University of Oregon soccer team received its final exhibition test of the preseason, taking on UC Davis Saturday evening at the Aggie Soccer Stadium in Davis, Calif. The Ducks held an 8-5 advantage in shots in the first half and kept the UC Davis offense at bay for much of the exhibition, but an 85th minute goal sealed a 1-0 Aggie victory.
“We’re disappointed to walk away with the result we did, but at the same time, we took a lot of positives away from this exhibition,” said head coach Kat Mertz. “I thought we came out sharp in the first half and in the beginning of the second half. We’re looking forward to coming home and working on things next week before the season opener Friday against Portland State.”
Junior Bri Pugh looked dangerous in attack for the Ducks, tallying four shots, two of which went on frame. Pugh provided the first scoring opportunity of the contest in the 9th minute with a shot that required a save from UC Davis goalkeeper Taylor Jern.
Ryann Davie and Maryn Beutler put a pair of shots on goal in the 13th and 18th minutes, but Jern handled each attack and the Ducks and Aggies went into the break in a 0-0 stalemate.
The Duck defense continued to turn down any UC Davis attack in the second half, but the Aggies managed to break through with five minutes remaining to steal a result. UC Davis broke on a counter attack and Sienna Drizin scored from just outside the six-yard box.
Oregon held a 3-2 edge in corners, while UC Davis finished with the slightest of advantages in shots, 13-12, and shots on goal, 6-5. Oregon drew two yellow cards in the contest.
Pugh led the way on offense with four shots. Shanelle Simien, Ryann Davie, Maryn Beutler and Kiyomi Cook each finished with a pair of shots.
Abby Steele earned the start in goal for Oregon, but didn’t see any action before being subbed off in favor of freshman Lauren Holden in the 8th minute. The San Ramon, Calif., native made five saves.
Mertz tried many different combinations of players tonight, using 16 student-athletes. Earning starting caps were; Pugh, Davie, Beutler, Cook, Simien, Steele, Reilley Moore, Achijah Berry, Riley Smith, Ashlee Schulz and Kristen Parr.
The Ducks open the regular season on Friday at Papè Field, hosting Portland State. The season-opener will begin at 5 p.m. (CT).
