Mele French Wins W-League Championship

BRADENTON, Fla. – Oregon Soccer alumna Mele French scored a goal and helped the LA Blues to the 2014 USL W-League Championship. The Blues defeated the Washington Spirit Reserves, 6-1, in the championship game on Sunday at IMG Academy Stadium.

French’s goal came just before halftime as she tapped in a pass from Sarah Killion. The Mililani, Hawaii, native played all 90 minutes in the championship game. The Blues capped off an undefeated season, their fourth in the past seven seasons.

Prior to the start of playoffs, French earned W-League Regular Season MVP honors. She was named the regular season Co-Assist Champion with Sarah Schweiss of the Colorado Pride after both tallied eight assists. The midfielder finished second in the scoring race with 24 points and third in the Golden Boot race with eight goals.

French, who played from 2002-04 at Oregon, has advanced to four championship finals in her five W-League seasons, earning three league titles. She is 10th in shots (82) in Oregon history. In 47 matches with the Ducks, French recorded eight goals and three assists for 19 points.
