Lanie Thompson: Pumpkin Carving Keeps Team in Stitches

Happy October, Duck fans!

It's been a little while since my last post but things have certainly been underway with running and school.  The great part is even with as busy as we've all been with schoolwork, we've still had some team get-togethers for dinner, dessert, and the latest festivity: pumpkin carving!

As far as running, we now have a couple meets under our belts, with our first showing at the Bill Dellinger Invitational, which proved to be quite a success.  We went in with a race strategy and kept it from start to finish.  Our last meet, which was in Wisconsin, was an important experience for us.  Although our overall performance was only average, the things we learned from the race will definitely prepare us for later on in the season.

The next few weeks will entail some solid training to get us ready for the first ever cross country Pac-12 Championships.  For those of you who remember, the top four teams at the Pac 10's last year were all within a few points of each other, and we're expecting another close race.  Clearly commitment and dedication are needed if we want to succeed as the championship season rolls around.  Luckily, there is no shortage of these qualities among the Lady Ducks!

Lastly, we still have two more ladies to hear from with their fun and interesting facts.  So to wrap it up we will get to know Becca Friday and Anne Kesselring a little bit more.

Becca Friday, a junior who has made a name for herself on the track, is another native of Bellingham, Wash.  If you think Becca Friday has range with her 800 speed and her success in cross country, I bet it would come as a surprise to hear that she actually went to the Junior Olympics for the long jump when she was younger!  On a different note, Becca is one of the most creative people I know.  I don't know if she has ever given a card that wasn't homemade.  Besides coming up with fun and new ways to give gifts and cards, in her spare time Becca absolutely loves watching Disney movies.  Just the other night at our team pumpkin carving get-together, she immediately put in the classic animated film, The Nightmare Before Christmas.  You can always count on Becca to bring out the fun side of you!

Anne Kesselring, another junior, has traveled the farthest to attend the U of O.  Most of you already probably know that Anne is from Germany, but what you might not know is her notable language speaking abilities.  When you ask her how many languages she can speak, she responds by saying four and a half, which is quite impressive for a 21-year old.  A great thing about having a teammate and friend from Germany is the care packages Anne receives from her family.  If you're ever craving delicious German chocolate, Anne's house is the place to go!  On top of an awesome supply of chocolate, Anne is quite the baker!  The funny thing about her baking is that she spends so much time making it look absolutely perfect that when it comes to cutting the cake, she has to have someone else do it because she can't bear to be the one to mess up her creation.  But hey, I'm not complaining, her baking benefits everyone on the team!

Stay tuned for some more updates as the championship season rolls our way and like always, GO DUCKS!
