Walker's Pace: Women's XC Opens Season at No. 1

The Women of Oregon will open the 2012 cross country season ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to the the USTFCCCA preseason poll, which was released Tuesday.
In an exceptionally close vote, the Ducks had 345 points and four first-place votes. Washington was just two points back with 343 points and five first place votes, followed by Georgetown (337) and Florida State (334), as just 11 points separated the top four teams.
Five of the top 14 teams were from the Pac-12 with No. 8 Stanford, No. 13 Colorado and No. 14 Arizona joining the Ducks and Huskies.
On the men's side, Oregon will open the season at No. 22.
The Ducks were one of five Pac-12 teams ranked, including No. 5 Colorado, No. 9 Stanford, No. 26 Washington State and No. 30 UCLA.
Defending champion Wisconsin was a near-unanimous No. 1 pick, followed by Oklahoma State, Brigham Young and Oklahoma.
