LOS ANGELES – The No. 4 University of Oregon softball team (40-7, 15-3) rallied for four runs in the seventh inning Sunday to stake a 7-5 victory over No. 16 UCLA (32-17, 8-13) Sunday afternoon at Easton Stadium.

Picking an opportune time for her first hit of the game, senior right fielder Samantha Pappas hit a two-out, three-run homer in the seventh inning to give the Ducks their third straight series over the 11-time national champions.

The All-American’s sixth homer of the season was her 36th career-wise and moved her into a tie for third all-time for Oregon with former teammate Kelsey Chambers.

The Mission Viejo, Calif., native Pappas also broke the school record for career RBI (147) and passed former great Lindsey Welch (145).

Pappas’s shot off a 0-0 pitch to center field drove in juniors Courtney Ceo and Kailee Cuico who had walked on 3-1 and 3-2 counts.

The Ducks’ first run in the seventh came courtesy of sophomore center fielder Janie Takeda. The Pac-12 leader in hits (72) scored from third base on a sacrifice fly by senior Kaylan Howard, after she had singled, and advanced on Ceo’s walk and a wild pitch.

In the fifth inning, Takeda knocked in UO’s first runs via a three-run homer – her third of the year – and drove in a pair of teammates who had been hit by pitches.

Altogether Sunday, Takeda went 3-for-4 and posted her 24th multi-hit and 10th multi-RBI games of the season.

In the circle, All-America senior Jessica Moore (21-3) posted her eighth complete game of 2013, struck out six, walked three, gave up five hits, and two of her five runs allowed were earned.

After the Bruins were set down 1-2-3 the first three innings, they scored three runs in the fourth inning on a two-run homer by B.B. Bates and RBI ground-out by Devon Lindvall.

An inning later, UCLA added its final two runs thanks to three singles, a fielder’s choice and a pair of Duck errors. Takeda, however, prevented another run from scoring on an inning-ending assist to home for the inning’s final out.

UCLA starter Ally Carda pitched four innings, struck out four, walked two, allowed two hits, and three earned runs.

Jessica Hall (6-6) pitched the next 2.2 innings, struck out two, walked three, yielded three hits, and four earned runs.

Paige McDuffie retired UO’s final out on a line out to the third baseman.

Five Bruin batters hit safely once, and Bates was the only player with an extra-base hit - her third homer of the series and Pac-12 leading 20th of the season.

Oregon won the series from UCLA by a 2-1 count for the third straight season after it took Friday’s game, 9-6. UCLA won the other contest, 7-5, Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the arrival of fourth-year head coach Mike White, the Ducks had lost 12 straight games to the Bruins, and had taken only one series in 2005 (3-0) and tied in 1998 (2-2) since their first meeting in 1985.

Overall for the three games, Takeda led UO in hitting (.500, 6H, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB), and three others topped .300 – Pappas (.455, 5H, HR, 6 RBI), freshman catcher Janelle Lindvall (.417, 5H, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) and junior DP Alexa Peterson (.333, 3H, HR, RBI, 2 BB).

On Duck career lists, Pappas also claimed improvements during the weekend on career lists for hits (fourth, 225) as did Kaylan Howard in RBI (fifth, 138) and hits (10th, 193).

On Oregon top-10 season lists, improvements went to Ceo (runs, seventh, 47), Howard (extra-base hits, seventh, 25; runs, 10th, 44) and Takeda (runs, 10th, 44).

In the circle for the three games, sophomore Karissa Hovinga staked a 0.00 ERA (6.2 IP, 5 SO, 0 BB, 3 H), and Moore received the other win among her two starts (9.1 IP, 9 SO, 6 BB, 13 H).

Moore upped her school records for wins (94), strikeouts (852), appearances (165) and innings (845), and her 21st win of the campaign moved her into a tie for eighth on the Duck season charts.

Looking ahead, UO returns home this week for its final home stand of the regular season.

The Ducks first host Seattle in a doubleheader on Wednesday, May 1 that starts at 1 p.m.

Next weekend, Oregon welcomes NCAA Regional finalist Oregon State for three games (Fri.-Sun., May 3-5), and all three tilts will be televised live by the Pac-12 Network.
