SEATTLE, Wash. - Mike Berry won the men's 400 meters in a season-best 46.03 seconds Friday at the UW Final Qualifier to solidify his bid to next week's NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Berry, a junior from Seattle, was quick out of the blocks and accelerated through the first 200 meters and was clear of the field when Washington's James Alaka dropped off after pacing him through 250 meters. Berry then galloped home with the fourth fastest time in the NCAA this season. His 46.03 was just a tenth of a second off the indoor school record Berry set at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
In other action from Seattle, Johnathan Cabral won the men's 60 meter hurdles in 7.79 seconds. That time was just off a seasonal best (7.75) for the sophomore from Calabasas, Calif.
Annie Leblanc ran a personal best 4:37.93 to finish second in the women's mile. The freshman from Repentigny, Quebec, charged to the lead on the final lap and was caught only by Hannah Kiser of Idaho, who won in 4:37.55. It was a :06 personal best for Leblanc.
Sarah Penney took sixth in the same race in 4:39.89. The junior from Paradise Valley, Ariz., also ran a :06 PR.
Jillian Weir was second in the weight throw with a mark of 65-2/19.86m.
Currently tied for 16th nationally, Weir will have to wait out the results of meets Saturday at Virginia Tech and Iowa State to see if she will advance to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
Lauren Crockett was the runner-up in the women's high jump with a clearance at 5-9.25/1.76m. Chancey Summers also cleared 5-9.25 but was third based on misses.
Meanwhile at the Alex Wilson Invitational at Norte Dame, the men's distance medley relay team ran a season-best 9:31.91 to finish sixth in its heat.
The team of Matt Miner, Arthur Delaney, Boru Guyota and Brett Johnson was 15th overall at a meet that saw 16 of the nation's top 17 distance medley relays run Friday night. The top 12 teams from South Bend all qualified for next weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships, with the Ducks missing a bid by less than a second.
