Oregon football coach Mark Helfrich and track and field coach Robert Johnson will join Andrew Wheating and a host of TrackTown luminaries at Tuesday's Tracktown Tuesday event, at 7 p.m. at the Valley River Inn.
Helfrich will talk about Oregon's unique place as a frontrunner among Division I colleges where football and track operate in collaberation. The Ducks' NCAA Championship qualifying 4x100 meter relay team includes three football players, De'Anthony Thomas, Dior Mathis and B.J. Kelley.
Wheating, a five-time NCAA champion from Oregon, two-time Olympian, and current Oregon Track Club Elite, will serve as the night’s host, and will be joined by TrackTown USA President Vin Lananna, Prefontaine Classic meet director Tom Jordan and coaches from the University of Oregon track and field team.
Wheating was the star of the 2010 NCAA Championships at Historic Hayward Field, winning national titles in both the 800 meters and the 1,500 meters, and leading a memorable 1-2-3 Oregon sweep of the latter event with teammates A.J. Acosta and Matthew Centrowitz.
“This is the most exciting time of the year in TrackTown USA,” Lananna said. “The best athletes in the world are coming to Hayward Field for the Prefontaine Classic; and only three days later, Oregon’s men and women will be competing for national titles in their home stadium.”
Both the men’s and women’s team at Oregon are currently ranked No. 3 in the nation.
Prior to the night’s main attraction, fans of all ages will have an opportunity to participate. There will be a run along the bike path, with flights leaving between 6 and 6:30 p.m. from the Valley River Inn. All runners will receive a free beverage from Hop Valley Brewing Co. and a chance to win two tickets to the Pre Classic. Jordan Kent’s Youth Challenge will also be onsite with fun activities and healthy snacks for kids from 6-7 p.m.
After 7 p.m., fans can expect drawings for NCAA tickets, a Nike Fuel Band, and KIND Healthy Snacks. Beverages from Hop Valley Brewing Co. will be offered for a $1 donation to Relay for Life, and appetizers will be served.
The 2013 TrackTown Tuesday series continues on June 11 at Valley River Center. Tickets to the NCAA Championships are currently on sale. Go to goducks.com/tracktickets.com for more information.
