EUGENE – University of Oregon redshirt senior Britney Henry paced the Duck track and field teams in her final regular season home appearance – the Oregon Twilight – staged Saturday at the UO’s historic Hayward Field.
The All-American from Spokane, Wash., won the hammer throw against an all-star field thanks to a meet record and season best on her second throw Saturday (221-7). Overall on her six throw series, she added marks of 216-7, 213-5 and 219-4 on her first, third and fourth throws – all in the neighborhood of her previous season best of 218-2 that ranked her 10th in the U.S. this season – then fouled her fifth and sixth attempts.
Four other post-collegiate throwers ranked top-15 nationally this season followed Henry in Saturday’s standings – Loree Smith of the New York Athletic Club (second, season best 221-5), Bethany Hart (third, 220-6), Jen Leatherman (fourth, 218-4) and Cari Soong (sixth, 196-3). Former Duck and Team XO member Brittany Hinchcliffe added fifth place with a season best (209-9).
The women’s javelin was equally national caliber as American record holder and four-time U.S. champion Kim Kreiner retook the Hayward Field record with her winning throw (189-7) and beat the former stadium mark held by Sarah Malone (186-10, 2005), while Malone also held the former meet record (174-0, 2001).
Oregon sophomore Rachel Yurkovich, the U.S. and collegiate event leader with her personal best of 189-11 from March, logged the second-best throw of her career Saturday to finish second overall (185-11), and was trailed by post-collegian and recent two-time NCAA champion Dana Pounds (third, 182-1) and former Duck NCAA runner-up Sarah Malone of Team XO (fourth, 160-8).
Kreiner opened with a throw of 160-1, then took the lead on her second throw (186-8), then improved slightly on each of her next three throws (187-11, 189-3, 189-7) before she fouled her final attempt. Yurkovich opened at 167-9, threw her best on her second toss, then recorded marks of 173-1, 181-3, 168-10 and 171-10. Pounds began with a foul, then threw 172-2, another foul, 182-1, 166-7 and 174-6.
Overall on the women’s side, two other performers claimed meet records. Former Duck All-American and unattached entrant Niki McEwen tied the pole vault meet record (first, 14-1 1/4) set by Becky Holliday in 2004, ’05 and ’06. Former Eugene resident Simidele Adeago of Nike added 8 1/2 inches to her triple jump meet record with Saturday’s winning mark (44-7 1/2, w:1.3) and bettered her former mark from last season (43-11 1/4).
The Duck women claimed four wins overall on the day thanks to additional wins by junior Ashley Bridenbeck (100m, 12.20 w:1.1), sophomore Leah Worthen (400m hurdles, personal best 62.81) and freshmen Emily Gillespie and Jasmine Kelly (high jump-tie, 5-5 3/4).
On the regional qualifying scene, 10 Ducks posted qualifying marks, including one new qualifier - Tara Rhein (pole vault, fourth, 12-5 1/2) who scored almost a foot personal best and moved into a tie for ninth all-time at UO with freshman teammate Eniko Eros.
Other regional qualifying marks Saturday came from sophomore Rebekah Noble (800m, second, 2:03.94), freshman Zoe Buckman (800m, third, 2:07.72), senior Emily Enders (pole vault, third, 12-9 1/2), sophomores Lucy Cridland (discus, second, 157-1), Megan Maloney (hammer, seventh, 178-10) and Ashley McCrea (javelin, sixth, 149-5) and freshman Kara Meeuwsen (javelin, seventh, 148-8).
Apart form the Duck rolls, other top marks came from former U.S. 800m champion Nicole Teter (first, 2:03.09), Canadian and Australian 1,500m runners Malindi Elmore (first, 4:14.34) and Georgie Clark (second, 4:18.16) and former Duck Lauryn Jordan of Team XO (100m hurdles, first, 14.28 w:1.1; shot put, first, 44-6 3/4; javelin, eighth, 112-6).
On the men’s side, Oregon continued its final preparation for the conference championships next week with six event victories and six regional qualifying marks.
In a stellar javelin field, Duck senior Ryan Brandel led collegiate entries and finished fourth overall (228-11) and trailed post-collegians Barry Krammes (first, 238-1), Eric Brown (second, 231-11) and Mike Hazle (third, 231-7). Brandel’s mark Saturday was his second-best this season behind his personal best of 238-0 from the Mt. SAC Relays three weeks ago that ranked him fourth in the U.S. and second among collegians last week.
UO’s new-faced sprint corps staked wins and season bests courtesy of juniors Phil Alexander in the 100m (10.50w, w:3.4) and Marcus Dillon in the 200m (21.23, w:1.1) and freshman Chad Barlow in the 400m (47.69). Sophomore Jared Huske was only .01 seconds away from tying his season best with his winning time in the 110m hurdles (14.19 w:1.3) with his fastest time ever at home.
Freshman Andrew Wheating claimed UO’s first regional qualifying mark of the season in the 800m (1:50.17) with his 5.15-second personal best that met the 1:50.40 regional standard.
Fellow frosh Kenny Klotz donned the UO uniform for the first time this track season and ran a personal best of 14:07.78 to mark UO’s seventh 5,000m runner this season that has met the 14:12.00 qualifying standard.
Oregon’s other regional mark came courtesy of senior David Moore (pole vault, first, 16-6 3/4) who tied his season best.
Other top marks Saturday from the post-collegiate rolls came from post-collegiate hammer throwers Travis Nutter (first, 234-8) James Parker (second, 233-7) and Mattias Jons (third, 232-4), high jumper Kyley Johnson of Team XO (first, 7-2 1/4), the Oregon Track Club’s Matt Scherer (800m, first, 1:47.89), Elliott Blount (800m, second, 1:48.76) and Lucas Meyer (steeplechase, first, 8:48.73), Twilight milers Ryan McKenzie of Windsor, Ontario (first, 4:01.00) and Adam Goucher of Nike (second, 4:02.45), and 5,000m runners Geoff Kerry of Calgary (first, 13:57.03) and Kevin Castille of Team Eugene (second, 13:57.32).
Looking ahead, the Ducks open the postseason in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, next Saturday-Sunday, May 12-13 at Stanford University. More meet information is located at the www.GoStanford.com and www.Pac-10.org websites.

ATHLETE / COACH QUOTES
“I’m very happy with my time – it represents a strong start and gives me excitement for the remainder of the season. I’ve been injured for the past 2 ½ years with various injuries and have only been training since late January. I felt that my progress has been by “leaps and bounds”. (For a while) I did not feel like I would have another opportunity to make a World team, but am excited by the chance of making this year’s team.”
“The wind during the race was difficult, especially after the rabbit dropped out. I was “all out” at 600 meters, and my strength carried me the last 200 meters. I feel strong, but need speed work.”
“My next race is a 1,500m at the Adidas Home Depot meet, followed by an 800m at the Eugene Road to Eugene High Performance meet and hopefully an 800m at the Pre meet (if I can get in).”
Rebekah Noble, Oregon, Women’s 800m, 2nd Place, 2:03.95
“Coach Lananna instructed me to not worry about the time, but rather just compete to win. I enjoy racing against Nicole since she is a tough competitor. I believe I need some speed work to get the kick back that I had last year. I’m still building towards the end of the season, and it’s been a different training cycle this year compared to last year because I’ve been focusing on both the 800m and 1,500m.
Matt Scherer, Oregon Track Club, Men’s 800m, 1st, 1:47.89
“I had a good week of practice and expected to run well. I’m very happy with my performance since it was a personal best by a second, and it is always good to win (and his second in the 800m). There was a little wind when I was out front, but I would rather run from the front and avoid the elbows and spikes in the pack.”
Britney Henry, Oregon, Women’s Hammer, 1st, Meet Record, 221-7
“I was worried about my technique and wanted a good series of throws, not just one big throw. The level of competition was outstanding which leads to big throws. I also think my breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes helped her performance (laughing). I was very encouraged by my performance and am looking forward to the Pac-10s.”
Barry Krammes, Unattached, Men's Javelin, 1st, 238-0
“I train in East Stroudsburg, Pa., where I’m a high school history teacher, so I need to get back to be at class on Monday. Next year I may consider not teaching so I could train full-time for the 2008 Olympic Trials.
“This is only my third meet of the season (took second place last week in the Penn Relays), and the weather has been bad, so my outdoor training has been lacking.”
“I wanted a bigger throw today and believe that I can throw a lot further. Hayward Field is an awesome place to throw, and I enjoy competing against some “big name” guys.”
Ryan McKenzie, Windsor, Ontario, Men's Twilight Mile, 1st, 4:01.00
“This was fun since it was my first time running at Hayward Field. I’m a huge Steve Prefontaine fan, and was inspired as a teenager by the Prefontaine movie “Without Limits”. I want to move to the next level (world class), and my first goal is to make the Olympic qualifying standard in either the 1,500m or 5,000m. I would love the opportunity to come back and compete in the Prefontaine Classic meet in June. (His PR of 3:58 was set in 2004).
Rachel Yurkovich, Oregon, Women’s Javelin, 2nd Place, 185-11
“It was a great competition, but I was a little fatigued and was hoping to throw farther. I was psyched to compete against Kim and prove to myself that I can compete with her - it was my best performance against her.”
Kim Kreiner, Unattached, Women’s Javelin, 1st Place, 189-7 (Hayward Field/Meet Record)
“I was not that pleased with my performance because I was hoping for a mark between 190-193 feet to start the season, but I had some “first meet jitters” and felt like I was trying to throw 250 feet on my first throw (her American record is 204-10 - 2006). I enjoyed the competition, and focused on my performance and not the other throwers. The conditions were great, even though it was brisk and there was a slight headwind which is not perfect for the new javelin."
Vin Lananna, Oregon Director of Track & Field
“This meet will help us make final decisions for the Pac-10 and NCAA Championships. Some questions were answered, but some performances created new questions.”
“I was pleased, but not surprised with the performances of Britney Henry and Rachel Yurkovich against strong fields. I was happy that Kenny Klotz got the regional qualifying mark in the 5,000m (14:12.00), so he will get the opportunity to compete in the West Regional meet in Eugene in three weeks.”
