SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Former Oregon All-American Jessica Moore and current sophomore Cheridan Hawkins led the USA Softball Women’s National Team to a round robin victory over Cuba in the Mayor’s Cup Thursday evening. Moore and Hawkins combined to allow just five hits and one earned run in a 4-1 victory against Cuba.
USA will face Cuba again for the second time in as many days today at 10 a.m. (PT) for the Gold Medal Game. Due to the weather delays, the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds Canada and Puerto Rico will face off for third place, while the No. 1 and No. 2 seeded USA and Cuba move to the Championship Game.
Moore, Oregon’s best pitcher in program history, earned the start in the circle and pitched into the fourth inning in a winning effort. The Sutter, Calif., native tallied one strikeout and allowed just one earned run on four hits before being relieved by her teammate with one out remaining in the fourth frame.
Hawkins earned the save in dominate fashion. She allowed just one hit and got the final 10 outs of the game with eight strikeouts to slam the door shut on Cuba.
Team USA scored a single run in the first three innings and another in the sixth to advance to the gold medal game.
