TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Oregon softball team (4-2) capped the weekend with another exciting effort in the Kajikawa Classic with a 3-2 win in eight innings over Cal State Northridge.

Sophomore starting pitcher Brittany Rumfelt (2-0) scored her second win of the day thanks to her two innings of relief in which she struck out one, walked one, and allowed only one hit and one unearned run in the extra inning.

Freshman starter Jessica Moore started the game – her third in as many days – and struck out four, walked three, allowed five hits, and her one run allowed was earned. At the plate, the Sutter, Calif., native also had her first two hits of her career, including an RBI double in the second inning to put UO up 1-0.

In the eighth and final inning, fellow frosh Kaylan Howard knocked in freshman left field Allie Burger to tie the game, 2-2. Howard then advanced to third base on a double by senior centerfielder Neena Bryant and then scored the game-winner when she beat the throw home on an infield groundout by sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers.

The Matadors scored their first run in the fourth on a homer by designated player Jennifer Mosier – her second of the day. CSUN then took the lead in the top half of the eighth when the runner placed on second base to start the first extra inning advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on a sacrifice fly to deep left field.

“I was happy that we came away with four wins against some quality teams,” Oregon head coach Mike White said. “We bounced back from two tough losses yesterday, so it was good that we showed we can do the same to other teams. Overall, our batting and ERA stats were good, so if we continue that we’ll be successful. We got some great pitching by Brittany in some key situations late in the game today. Jessica also did excellent in her third game of the weekend and looked pretty strong in her third game this week, and helped us with her bat.”

In its first weekend of the season under White, UO won its Friday games vs. returning NCAA regional finalist Notre Dame (4-1) and Creighton (8-2) and Sunday vs. Western Michigan (4-0) and Cal State Northridge (3-2), while dropping both of its Saturday contests to NCAA veteran San Diego State and Texas Tech by 4-3 counts.

Altogether in the Tempe trip, Pappas stroked a team-high three home runs – two of them in lead-off fashion, and also led the team in hitting (.389), hits (7) and stolen bases (3). Three other regular starters hit over .300 – freshman left fielder Allie Burger (.375, 6-for-16, 1 double, 1 triple), freshman second baseman Kaylan Howard (.333, 6-for-18, 5 runs) and senior centerfielder Neena Bryant (6-for-18, 2 doubles, 1 home run).

On the mound, Rumfelt picked up Sunday’s other wins, while UO’s first day wins featured the third- and 10-best ever strikeout totals in complete games by Moore (12) and sophomore Samantha Skillingstad (10) vs.  the Blue Jays and Irish.

Looking ahead, UO travels to the Louisville Slugger Classic in Las Vegas and first faces BYU, Thursday, February 18 at 5 p.m. UO then takes on Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State, Friday, February 19 at 11:15 a.m. and 3:45 p.m., and Indiana on Saturday, February 20 at 1:30 p.m.
