EUGENE - Returning national champion and No. 12 UCLA (33-16, 9-11) relied on a pair of late-inning home runs to even the softball season series with No. 11 Oregon (38-14, 10-1) Friday night at Howe Field, thanks to its 7-4 decision.

Suffering only their third loss in the last 11 games, the Ducks put two runs across in the second inning, then added solo home runs in the third and fourth innings from junior Kelsey Chambers and senior Kaitlin Vitek.

Chambers' team-leading 12th round-tripper of the season moved her into ties for sixth all-time for UO in a season and eighth career-wise (thanks to her 25th in the latter category).

Vitek's ninth homer of 2011 moved her into sole possession of second for UO this season, and raised her career total to 12.

Team-wise, the Ducks now have 68 homers on the campaign - one shy of the school record (69) set in a 69-game season in 1999.

UO's first two runs came in the second inning after a pair of one-out singles. Sophomore Allie Burger followed with a drive to straight-away center field that the fielder dropped after retreating back.

UCLA scored the game's first run on a suicide squeeze in the first inning, then retied it 2-2 in the third inning on a two-out bases-loaded single.

The Bruins retied the contest, 4-4, in the fifth inning on a two-run homer by Devon Lindvall. An inning later in the sixth, Bates followed suit with her second four-bagger of the series - a three-run shot off reliever Brittany Rumfelt - for the deciding margin.

Duck sophomore and starter Jessica Moore (21-9) took the loss. In her 5 1/3 innings, she struck out eight, walked one, gave up eight hits, and only one one of her five runs allowed was earned.

Rumfelt worked the final 1 2/3 innings, struck out four, walked one, allowed one hit, and both of her runs allowed were earned.

For the game, three Ducks hit safely - Vitek (2-for-3), freshman Alexa Peterson (2-for-3), Chambers (1-for-3) and sophomore Kaylan Howard (1-for-3).

UCLA freshman Jessica Hall (16-8) got the win in her four innings of relief, and struck out four, walked none, yielded only two hits, and her run allowed was earned. Sophomore Destiny Rodino worked the first two innings, struck out two, walked none, gave up four hits, and one of her three runs allowed was earned.

At the plate for the Bruins, seven starters hit safely, and two had multiple hits - GiOnna DiSalvatore (2-for-3, walk) and Andrea Harrison (2-for-4).

In other action around the Pac-10 Friday, the other three series were also evened up, 1-1. No. 11 Stanford ended No. 1 Arizona State's 12-game conference winning streak with a 6-1 decision in Tempe; No. 5 Cal beat No. 10 Arizona, 9-4, in Tucson; and No. 14 Washington lost, 4-3, to Oregon State in Corvallis.

Looking ahead, the two teams return for the series and regular season finale Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The Howe Field faithful will also honor UO's senior class that has helped the program to its first-ever Super Regional bid and a pair of Regional trips.

As part of the 'Senior Night' promotion, senior citizens receive admission Saturday for only $1. Vouchers will also be available at the Howe Field ticket window for $5 off reserved baseball tickets for the 2 p.m. game that day.

Afterwards, the softball world will tune into the 64-team NCAA Tournament selection show on Sunday, May 15 at 7 p.m. PT on ESPN-U.
