STANFORD, Calif.  – En route to its ninth win over a returning NCAA tourney qualifier this season, the No. 17 University of Oregon softball team (24-7, 3-3) staked an 8-5 win Thursday in the first game of its three-game series at No. 14 Stanford (27-9, 1-6).

The Ducks posted their third straight series win after it scored once in the first, twice in the third, once in the fourth, three times in the fifth and once more in the seventh. The fellow returning Super Regional advancer Cardinal scored twice in the third and fifth innings, then added a final run in the sixth.

Offensively for the Ducks, junior second baseman Kaylan Howard (1-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 SB) and sophomore first baseman Kailee Cuico (2-for-3, 4 RBI) hit their seventh and fourth homers of the season, respectively.

Junior left fielder Allie Burger added a 2-for-3 day, and four others hit safely once – sophomore third baseman Courtney Ceo (1-for-4), senior shortstop Kelsey Chambers (1-for-2, 1 SB), sophomore catcher Alexa Peterson (1-for-4, 1 RBI) and junior right fielder Samantha Pappas (1-for-4).

In the first inning, Cuico collected her fourth, game-winning RBI of the year, thanks to a sacrifice fly that scored Ceo who had singled, and advanced on an error by the left fielder and passed ball.

Howard stroked her two-run homer in the third inning, and knocked in Burger who had opened the inning right before with a single down the left field line.

Pappas scored Oregon’s next run in the fourrh, when after she tripled to right center, and scored when freshman left fielder Sara Goodrum reached on an error by the second baseman.

Extending her team-current hit streak to 10 games, Cuico added three critical runs in the fifth with her three-run round-tripper. The shot to left field scored Howard and Ceo who had reached via a walk and error by the third baseman, respectively.

UO’s final run in the seventh came courtesy of a bunt by Peterson that scored Chambers who had doubled with one out, and advanced to third base on a single by Cuico.

In the circle, junior pitcher Jessica Moore (17-5), struck out four, walked three, allowed 11 hits (a season opponent high), and all five of her runs allowed were earned. Career-wise, she staked her 17th win of the season to move into a tie for 11th all-time for UO, while her 57th career victory is fourth-best for the Ducks, and only two shy of the third-best mark by former great Jennie Cook (59).

For Stanford, junior pitcher and fellow All-Pac12 returnee Teagan Gerhart (22-5), struck out three, walked two, allowed nine hits, and five of her eight runs allowed were earned.

Four Cardinal hitters connected on multiple hits – returning national player of the year Ashley Hansen (2-for-4), Leah White (2-for-3) and Cassandra Roulund (2-for-4).

Looking ahead, UO will close out the series with single games on both Friday and Saturday with start times at 7 p.m. and noon, respectively, and live stats available via the www.GoStanford.com website.
