EUGENE - The No. 1 University of California softball team (41-3, 13-2) came back from Oregon’s win Saturday to take the series finale, 10-0, Sunday afternoon at Howe Field.

The No. 14 Ducks (32-11, 9-7) gave up a season-high 10 runs, and lost their first contest this season in less than seven innings.

The returning World Series advancer Bears validated their host of top-six national offensive rankings by scoring five runs in both the third and sixth innings.

In the third, returning All-American Jamia Reid opened the inning with a triple to right center field, then scored on an infield ground-out. After Duck starter Jessica Moore (22-8) followed with three walks to load the bases, head coach Mike White brought in freshman Karissa Hovinga who gave up a 2-RBI double to Daniella Henderson and 2-RBI single to Jolene Henderson.

In the fourth and fifth innings, Hovinga only allowed one hit and no runs, before Cal used three homers to score its final five runs in the sixth. Ashley Decker and Breana Kostreba drilled a pair of two-run round-trippers, sandwiched around a solo shot by U.S. National Team member Valerie Arioto.

For the game, junior Kaylan Howard (2-for-3) led the Ducks in hits, and freshman Janie Takeda (1-for-3) collected UO’s other hit. Sophomore Kailee Cuico also reached base Sunday via a walk.

Moore ultimately pitched 2.2 innings, struck out one, walked five, allowed three hits, and four of her runs allowed were earned. Hovinga pitched the final 3.1 innings, struck out one, walked none, allowed eight hits, and all six of her runs allowed were earned.

Cal’s returning Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year Jolene Henderson (24-1) struck out six, walked one, allowed three hits, and staked her 11th shutout of the season.

At the plate for the Bears, eight of the team’s nine hitters batted safely, and two had multiple hits – Ashley Decker (2-for-3, 3 RBI) and Daniella Henderson (2-for-3, 2 RBI). Arioto (1-for-2, 1 RBI) reached base a game-high three times, thanks to her two walks.

In earlier series action, UO became only the third team to beat Cal this season with Saturday’s 1-0 shutout, while the Bears won Friday’s opener, 8-1, aided by six unearned runs off Duck errors.

For the three-game set, Howard hit .500 (4H), and three others hit .286 with two hits – senior Kelsey Chambers, Cuico and Alexa Peterson. Moore picked up the team’s series win, owned a 2.05 ERA, and posted 14 strikeouts, eight walks and 12 hits in 13.2 innings.

On Duck all-time lists this weekend, Moore climbed career charts in shutouts (fifth, 15) and appearances (eighth, 116), and season lists in wins (fifth, 22) and strikeouts (sixth, 176),

In other action around the league Sunday, No. 3 Arizona State beat No. 16 Stanford, 7-1, to cement the sweep at home; No. 24 Oregon State beat No. 9 Washington at home, 3-2, to take the series, 2-1; No. 15 UCLA beat Utah, 9-1 (6), at home to sweep the series; and No. 12 Arizona topped New Mexico twice earlier this week at home (but was off this weekend).

The Ducks remained tied for third with UCLA in the nation’s top softball league with 9-7 records behind No. 1 California (13-2) and No. 3 Arizona State (11-2). Other league members’ conference marks follow: No. 12 Arizona (fifth, 8-7), No. 11 Washington (7-10), No. 24 Washington State (6-8), No. 16 Stanford (6-12) and Utah (0-15).

Looking ahead to next weekend, UO heads to Tucson for its final regular season road trip at No. 12 Arizona for three single games Friday-Sunday, April 27-29. Live stats from each game will be available at the www.ArizonaAthletics.com website.

Afterwards, Oregon plays its final eight games of the season at home at Howe Field in a doubleheader vs. Seattle (Wed., May 2, 1 p.m.), and three-game sets vs. No. 10 Missouri (Fri-Sat., Mary 4-5) and No. 15 UCLA (Thu.-Sat., May 10-12).
