EUGENE – The No. 12 University of Oregon softball team (37-14, 11-8) wrapped its penultimate weekend of the regular season with an 8-3 win and 7-3 loss vs. No. 9 Missouri (40-12, 14-7) in their doubleheader at Howe Field Saturday.

*GAME 2 RECAP

The returning World Series advancing Tigers bounced back from a loss immediately before with a 7-3 win, thanks to another fine pitching effort by All-American Chelsea Thomas (21-7).

Missouri racked up five runs in the second inning, then added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

UO answered with two runs in the fourth on a two-run homer by senior Kelsey Chambers and another run in the fifth on an RBI single by senior Christie Nieto.

Chambers’ ninth round-tripper of the season moved her into a tie for second all-time for UO career-wise (35), and within two of the team season lead.

For the game, six Ducks hit safely once, and junior Samantha Pappas doubled for the 11th time this year and moved into a tie for the team season lead with junior Kaylan Howard and Chambers.

Duck starter and junior Jessica Moore (25-11) pitched the first six innings, struck out three, walked two, allowed seven hits, and four of her seven runs allowed were earned.

Freshman Karissa Hovinga worked the final inning, and posted no strikeouts or walks, and allowed one hit and no runs.

For the game, MU’s Nicole Hudson (3-for-3) hit three doubles and was the lone Tiger with multiple hits.

In the circle, Thomas struck out nine, walked four, allowed six hits, and all three of her runs allowed were earned.

In team comparisons, Missouri held edges in hits (7-6), fewest runners left on base (5-6) and fewest errors (0-1), and UO owned advantages in walks drawn (4-2).

* GAME1 RECAP

In the 8-3 opening win, the Ducks one-hit the Tigers who entered the game ranked top 50 nationally in a host of offensive categories.

Oregon struck for five runs in the third, two in the fourth, and another in the fifth to stake their ninth victory against a top-25 team this year (including four against top-10 foes).

In the third inning, UO junior Samantha Pappas drilled her seventh homer of the season after freshman Janie Takeda and junior Kaylan Howard led off with a single and walk. After a pair of outs, senior Christie Nieto reached on an error by the first baseman on a grounder through her legs.

Sophomore Alexa Peterson followed with her sixth homer of the season to a nearly identical spot as Pappas’.

In the fourth, Takeda led off with a single on a grounder past a diving third baseman, and Howard followed with her team-leading 11th homer of the season. That career-season high round-tripper moved her into a tie for ninth all-time for UO in a campaign.

In the sixth, Cuico added a two-out RBI single up the middle after Pappas had doubled.

Missouri scored its first run in the third when after its opening batter reached on an error by the third baseman, and after a walk, Kelsea Roth singled to left field for the RBI.

In the fifth, Duck starter and junior Jessica Moore (25-10) hit three of the first four batters, and the last one forced in a run (after she had walked another prior batter).

Freshman Karissa Hovinga came in with still no outs and bases loaded in the inning, and coaxed a strikeout, grounder and fly out to allow only one more run. The Ralston, Neb. product ultimately pitched the last three innings, struck out three, walked none and allowed no hits en route to her second save of the season.

Moore struck out six, walked three, gave up one hit, and two of her three runs allowed were earned. The All-Pac-12 returnee climbed into a tie for second all-time for UO for wins in a season (25) with Ani Nyhus (2004).

At the plate at game’s end, three Ducks had multiple hits – Howard (2-for-3), Pappas (2-for-4) and Cuico (2-for-3).

Tiger starter and senior Kristin Nottelmann (12-5) struck out four, walked two, allowed 10 hits, and six of her eight runs allowed were earned.

At the plate for Missouri, the visitors’ lone batter to hit safely was Roth who singled in the third inning.

On other all-Duck career charts after Saturday's games, Pappas moved into a tie for eighth all-time for homers (26) and walks (69), and Moore climbed the appearance list (sixth, 122).

On all-time Oregon season lists, Cuico jumped to fourth all-time in RBI (47-tied), and other season-list improvements were claimed by Howard (extra-base hits, ninth, 23-tied; RBI, 11th, 44-tied), Chambers (runs, seventh, 44-tied) and Moore (starts, sixth, 35-tied; innings, eighth, 225).

For the three-game set, Cuico led UO in hitting (.556), hits (5-tied) and walks (2-tied). Four others topped .300 - Pappas (.500, 5H, 2 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2BB), Howard (.400, 4H, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB), Takeda (.333, 3H, 1BB) and Nieto (.300, 3H, 1 RBI).

Moore pitched 17 of the team's 21 innings, staked a 2.88 ERA, went 1-2, struck out 14, walked six, allowed 15 hits, and seven of her 15 runs allowed were earned.

Later this weekend, Oregon softball fans catch the rebroadcast of Friday night’s 5-4 win by Missouri on Saturday at 10 p.m. and Sunday at midnight.

Looking ahead, the Ducks cap the regular season at home against No. 17 UCLA with three games next Thursday-Saturday, May 10-12 at Howe Field. Afterward, the NCAA tournament selection show will air on ESPN-U on Sunday, May 13 at 7 p.m. PT.
