UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 11 University of Oregon softball team (41-14) advanced to the regional final for the seventh time the last nine seasons with its 2-0 shutout of Fordham (42-18) Saturday afternoon at Penn State's Beard Field.

Seeded 13th overall in the 64-team field, the Ducks scored both of their runs on a two-run homer by Kailee Cuico. The San Pedro, Calif., native sent the towering shot over the left field wall in the fifth inning and raised her season total to seven on the season - tops among Duck freshmen.

Prior to that, the two starting pitchers - Oregon sophomore Jessica Moore (23-9) and Fordham's All-America junior pitcher Jen Mineau (24-8) - had allowed only one combined hit.

The Atlantic-10 Conference Champion Rams ultimately hit safely only once - a second-inning single to the shortstop - while all of UO's came from the fifth inning on.

Freshman Alexa Peterson rapped UO's first hit in the fifth inning with a single through the right side, and scored two batters later on Cuico's shot. Sophomore Allie Burger added a two-out single up the middle, but was called out the next at-bat for leaving first base early.

Cuico's homer also ended a 81 2/3-inning scoreless streak by Mineau who was a first-team NFCA and All-American last year.

In the sixth, sophomore Kaylan Howard collected UO's fourth and final hit of the game with her second triple of the season, a two-out shot to right field, but was ultimately left on base.

On the mound, Moore boosted the Ducks with one of her finest efforts of the season.

Her 11-strikeout, one-walk complete game moved into a tie for fourth all-time for UO for wins in a season with Alicia Cook (23, 2007). She also allowed only one hit for the second time this year after holding the then-national leader, Arizona State, to a first-inning single in Oregon's 2-1 win in Eugene in early April.

Although she just missed the Ducks' 20th no-hitter ever, she had already achieved the feat with her 6-1 victory over Weber State in March, and a combined five-inning no-hitter with junior Samantha Skillingstad last year over Idaho State.

That same strikeout tally (11) for the Sutter, Calif,. native tied her third-best effort of the year that she logged vs. then-No. 12 and returning national champion UCLA last week, and was one shy of her season best (12) from her first two starts of the season vs. then-No. 16 BYU and Ole Miss.

Saturday's total also moved her second all-time for Oregon for strikeouts in a season (213) behind her school record from last year (238), and third career-wise in school history (451).

Looking ahead, UO faces the winner of Saturday evening's final game between Penn State and Fordham. The Nittany Lions eliminated Albany by a 6-1 score in Saturday's second game.

Sunday's opener is set for a 9 a.m. Pacific Time start on the Big Ten Network, while a live stats-only feed (but no internet broadcast) will be available at the website.
